    Motorbike insurance, travel insurance, breakdown cover

    In the Wiki I'm in the process of writing a page about Insurance and Breakdown Cover for the Trip. Near the bottom of the page is a table of organisations who provide:
    • motor insurance for the UK;
      motor insurance for overseas;
      breakdown cover for the UK;
      breakdown cover for overseas; and
      travel insurance.
    If you know of any companies that provide something relevant, please post details here (or add it to the table yourself if you're a Wiki editor). For example, perhaps your motobike insurance includes fully comp cover in the EU for a certain number of days. Perhaps you know of a good deal on breakdown cover. Or your travel insurance allows you to ride large motorcycles (many exclude bikes over 125cc).

    Does anyone know how many days Carole Nash's insurance is valid within the EU? I think it's somehting like 20 days, but need someone who knows for sure.

    Thanks.

    Dave,
    The amount of time per trip vairies, CN is a brooker and the amount of time depends on the insurance company they sell you. I was with an insurance company via CN and the had limits of 30 days total EU travel per year. I am still with CN but this time with Equity Royal Star and they have unlimited travel in the EU up to 90 days per trip. It is one of the things you need to check when you buy the insurance I paid slightly more for this option. Also on renewal they can change it without letting you know if they offer you a cheaper company the level of cover can change. Check you policy schedule.
    I use medical cover from a company called Direct Travel 01903 812345 the cover the use of motorcycles and you can have single or multi trip cover. I pay about £110 per year for two people. Cost depends on countries, level and time of each trip.

    For travel insurance I've got an annual policy with Direct Line and they've covered all my expenses after my accident in Italy in July (except the 3 nights in hotels in Vipiteno as I would've been staying at hotels for this nights anyway). This included taxis, rail ticket, 2 plane fares and my parent's fuel bills for collecting me from Stansted back to Somerset and from Yeovil up to Bristol for the flight back to the island. Got the cheque last week, so around a month after the accident.

    For breakdown cover, I'm with NCI - they did OK with my issue in France in June, but numpty here forgot to tick the accident recovery option, hence Dominator is still in Italy

    Never used breakdown cover on the bike in the UK, and I don't think it's fair to include the on-island coverage I'm with the AA though

    Bike insurance is with Highway through Bennetts - don't think I'd go with Highway again as they're not open at the weekend, which is when most riders would have accidents etc, and I'm still waiting for their insurance assessor's office in Milan to get to look over my bike in Fortezza (330km away) - must be something to do with Italy and August They aren't keeping me up to date with what's happening, they need my nudging, although they did send me a cheque for the recovery and storage fees accrued at the crash repair place in Vipiteno

    I'm just about to renew my insurance and am writing about it for Insurance Times. Will let you know the results of my efforts shortly.

    I thought that any insurance in one EU country, by law - well EC Directive - gave you a minimum of the mandatory insurance for any other EU country for the whole policy. So, for legal/police purposes you will be covered, but probably only for the equivalent of "act only" cover in the UK.

    In addition to this my ebike comprehensive policy gives me full cover for "the territorial limits": GB, NI, IoM, Channel Isles, Eire, Andorra, Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Cyprus, Denmark, Estonia, France (incl Monaco), Finalnd, Germnay, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, (incl San Marino & Vatican), Latvia, Liechenstein, Lithuania, Luzembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Polan, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Czech republic, Slovakia, Slovenia and Gibralta. I can't see anything that limits the number of days and as GB is in the list it must be any time.
