    UK M.O.T. Prices

    Out of pure interest.....

Is the M.O.T. charge standard for motorcycles or does it vary?

Can we compile a list of stations and charges here...

    Over to you lot...

I think that's the maximum they can charge, they can charge less if they want. The car max is about 40 quid and yesterday I saw a big sign outside a tyre place saying MOTs for a tenner. Just 5 minutes after I'd had a full price one as well...grrrrr
3 Africa Twins/280,000 miles. If it's happened to one of mine, it's gonna happen to one of yours.....eventually.

1 Varadero/17,000 miles ridden (of 40,000 miles on the bike), it's all still new to me!

think a big part of price hike is the computerisation that came in last year. now if a mot test staion turns the system on and connects to the MOT server (which they have to do to do a test) they get billed the testers fee from the government, this means that before you could do retests etc free as once a test certificate is raised on paper that was the end if but now to retest you have to reconnect to the MOT server and thus get billed again for the retest!...

as Yen pointed out some places are doing tests at cost but suspect they have a high fail rate and always need extra work done by the workshop to pass, its an old scam! what you loose on the test you make up in charged workshop hours!

At my local, Wullie Young motorcycles, last year was a tenner, this year £23.50 but £20 cash (saves him going up to the till for swipe).

Yep, it's the electronic MOT that pushed the prices up, cars are the same. Interesting fact about the new mot, when they enter the VIN into the system if it flags up a reported vin number the dealer has to impound the bike and wait for plod to arrive. I can see that ending in tears!

How many mistakes does computer inputters make? Bike impounded, police take you away, then tell you "sorry mate, puter error"

A bit like the tale of the guy taken home by police who stopped him for no insurance, to show them the cover note, insurance company hadn't updated details. The electronic age is great, but not perfect as they would believe! Imagine the hassle with bikes recorded as write offs being repaired? A nightmare waiting to happen!
