Years back I USED to do a lot of air rifle pest control. One rifle was fac rated. It would go up well above 30ftlb, but apart from the muzzle flip, it felt like a pair of bellows pushing the pellet out and shot to shot consistency (feet per second) was not good. After winding the power down and down I settled on 24ftlb. The gun was so consistent at that I always used that gun at that power level. It stuck as my nickname in with my mates that also shot air rifles.

The surname is Wheal, so I've always been called Whealie. But then, so has my Dad. When I signed up for ebay he'd already beaten me to it, so my name there is sonofwhealie.

As a nipper, I was 'the' best tree climber in our gang and used to reach the top, swing back and forth, then jump from one tree to the next With a surname of Civil, I soon became "Civil the Squirrel" which developed into squirrelciv.

Thing is that was a long time ago and I don't keep in touch with any of those guys anymore, but I chose it as a screen name as it's about the only nickname I ever had. Other than squirrelciv (back when I was 5-6) I've only been known as 'Civ', which is a bit too short and hard to find an avatar for

Comes from the first letter of my surname - used to get called Z but then when the wassup and bud frogs adverts were on it changed to z-weiser! - hence the avatar!

real name Damian - not really as good as only end up with devil references!!

Friends and family always told me I am a bit of a wandering soul and never stuck around much in one place or job. Have changed a little since I got married but still have that impulsive streak that comes in times least expected

    Definitions of Maverick

    1. An unbranded range animal (especially a stray calf); belongs to the first person who puts a brand on it
    2. irregular, independent in behavior or thought.
    3. The name of a Queen and Jack in the pocket. Suited or otherwise

For the past 20 years I've done mapping/navigation related research, usually with the GPS but also alternative positioning technologies, all over the planet. Lived out of a Landie/tent tracking free-range Highland Cattle across the Cairngorms, been a site surveyor for a Spanish-led archaeological dig on Easter Island, conducted GPS training to the Indian paramilitary and mapped indigent settlements in the equatorial rainforest. It was when I was part of an archaeological team surveying some of the 8 kazillion islands off the NE American/Canadian coast that the team dubbed me "the GeoBloke". Also answered to "NavMan" (but that's copyright infringment now).
Given the impact that Geography has had on my life it seemed an appropriate moniker. I now do research for the Ordnance Survey and belong to a rapid reaction mapping team that gets called out by the UN whenever there's a major disaster(earthquake, tsunami, flooding etc..) Off to southern Sudan in 3 weeks' time to show the UN and NGO's there how to track their convoys and personnel(hijacking/kidnapping is a reality in some areas). Wanted to bring the same tracking units to the National meet and stick 'em on a few bikes. They record your route like an off the shelf unit but also let others see where you're going in realtime via a webpage. Kinda cool.
