Do you have to have a credit card to sell on Ebay ??

    Hey all.

I`ve got lots of stuff I want to sell and reckoned it may be best on Ebay.

I`ve bought quite a lot of stuff there, and got good feedback, but I don`t have a Credit Card and it appears to be asking for a card to be registered in order to open a Seller`s Account.

    So...do I need a Credit Card ??

No. If they're asking for a card a debit card must be OK as Mrs.McVicar sells on there and I don't allow her a credit card. Gotta go before she sees this.

I assume you're talking about a Paypal account?
They use a credit card to help establish your credit rating, but for actually running the account they actually prefer you to use your bank account.
You should be able to set up an account without a credit card, but you may be non-verified, this doesn't matter until you've sold shed loads of stuff.
I always use my credit card to buy stuff through PayPal, then if it falls through the seller has to argue with the Luigi brothers from Capital One

No mate...I meant to just set up to sell things on Ebay.

I had another look this evening and I saw two options where previously there was only one - use a Credit Card ( Visa or Mastercard) or use a Debit Card (Switch or Maestro).
I don`t have a credit card and I don`t want to use my Switch card as that`s for my regular bank account.

I want to use a Halifax debit card....but it isn`t Switch/Maestro (it does however have a Visa sign on it,but it`s not a Credit Card).

I`m going to try it tomorrow to see what happens.

I don't think paypal check your credit rating, cant think of any reason they'd do that!

I've got a verified business paypal account that's set up using a debit card. You don't need a credit card to open a paypal account and I don't think they do a credit check unless you were taking out one of their own credit cards (not sure if they offer it in the UK yet but I know there's a paypal debit and credit card now in the US).

They use your credit/debit card only to take a couple of small payments of a few pence from you which leaves a code on your bank statement, then when you check your bank statement and go back to paypal and enter them, it verifies your account (they assume having access to the statements this means it's genuinely your card).

If you're selling on ebay (unless perhaps its a big item like a bike or something where cash is the best option) then paypal will be handy for you as lots of buyers prefer to pay via paypal and it makes things a bit quicker and easier for you as a seller as well. So it may mean more interest in your items offering that as an option, and it also means you can pay your paypal seller fees out of the money that you've made on the auction items themselves (assuming they've been paid via paypal ofcourse) Depending upon the amount you plan to sell then that may mean you need a paypal premier account however which incurs transaction fees (between 3 to 4% usually unless your cashflow through paypal is over a certain limit that offers you better rates). Up to a set amount you can use a personal account with them (which may be your best option to begin with as there are no transaction fees).

Visa electron is fine on eBay, I used to use my old halifax one on there with a few pence in it that way I was sure that no-one could take anythign out that they shouldn;t do...
