Another question about 4 wheel drives

Ok so I aint got one yet mostly because no'one has wanted to buy my van. Decided if I get one it will be a discovery hilux or shogun there seems to be a bit of stigma about the pajero's with insurance and parts cant see how I know there imported but they are still shogun's? The hilux seem to be very common in auto's which suits me because I cant use a clutch still we will see. Would have likes a defender but being skint does not help so the discovery which are auto's are the best bet.

Anyone want an automatic transit with 58000 on the clock by the way £1500 go on its got a turbo

MAin thing that bothering me is all the talk about the goverment nailing utility vechicles what exactly does this mean are they aiming it at new ones like the new tax brackets on modern cars or are they aiming it at everything across the large engine sized spectrum. And most of all what exectly are they supposed to be doing someone said road tax figures of £250 a year plus? Found this odd becuase with the gps plan they talked about making road tax obsolete????

Can anyone tell me for sure or is this counrty gone completely and totally barmy. Starting to think I should keep van trusty rusty tranny already put my festive reindeer on my bullbar.

rules on company car tax on LGV's is about to change and no longer will you be able to use a 4x4 as company car in the same way... cant comment exactly on what the financial implications are as all are vehicles are privately owned and leased to the business so we don't get taxed on them at at all.

In regard to 4x4's in general then I have to say if you want faultless reliability and indestructabilty and can cope with just 2 seats then look at either the Hilux or L200, no idea on what options they do in manual/auto though. If 4 seats are a must then late spec Hilux or L200 crewcabs are good but you will get hit with car tax and an inflated value as the are now 'trendy'

next up then no question Mitsubushi wins hands down in the 4x4 stakes the Shogun (UK market only) or the Pajero is a great vehicle the engineering is second to none as is back up with parts. If you can find an 'evolution' model thats not got a price tag of twice the vehicles weight in gold bars then buy it.....

lastly Discovery's... umm mixed views on these... older ones tend to be rolling rust buckets thanks to **** build quality and more water leaks than a wicker dogs bowl!.. stories of 4 year old vehicles needing new floors is not a myth! Running gear is common to all the range bar the freeloader so its tryed tested and proven (thats you will be tried to death tested to insanity and end up proven mental thanks to clonks, rattles and oil leaks ) but in its defence as these vehicles spend most there lives being taken to bits for one reason or no you wont have to much trouble in locating spares!.. if you must have disc look for a series 2, 300Tdi with an HP 22 auto and preferably the viscous transfer box as these are marginally more reliable than the earlier (200Tdi or V and later (TD5) vehicles.

oh nowt wrong wiv white rusty transits..lol we too have one!

Better get rid of the landy quick then, nearly finished with most projects.

Tipycally Britian is going to tax their Land Rover heritage to death untill that also becomes like the old british classics...only nice looking on paper

It might not be the most reliable vehichle out there but looking at the world wide following probably the most regonised 4x4 with the "Made in Britian" stamp all over it ever.

Unfortunately, when you put together "not the most reliable" and "made in Britain" you get what's most recognised about LR's.

Yeah , but us Defender owners just love the misery they inflict on us. What is positive cash flow anyway ?? I think bank statements look "real purty" in red. They have a dreadful reputation for reliability , but to be honest my ones have always got me home , well apart from the feeking TD5 but that's not classed as a landrover in my book. I even got home under my (or the landies) own power with a broken half shaft !!! did not sound very nice at all , but we got home. Try doing that with any other vehicle on earth ??
    2011 Triumph Tiger 800 - "Black Pussy" - MMMM Nice !!!
    2000 Suzuki DRZ400S - "Ol' Yella" - very bright
    2011 Peugeot V-Clic 50cc - "Scoot" - It's my wife's, an enjoyable ride.

    I have a house , but I can't guarantee it's safe !!

Landies suit those with masochistic tendencies (like yourself, as you say)or huge wallets(probably why they're the 4X4 of choice on Sloane Street). Isn't the most useful customisation you can do is to magnestise the rear axle to catch all the bits that fall off?

As the British motorcycling industry knows all too well(and me, having owned 2 Triumphs and a Norton Commando), the Japanese showed everyone how to build a reliable vehicle.
