"BUY ONE OF THESE, DO ANYTHING." 'Bike' Nov 2006

I have just found read a nice article on Adventure trail bikes you can buy for £3000 or less.

Guess which came in at Number 1

    Honda XRV750......followed by BMW R1100GS

The list gave the top nine bikes

Nice to see we are are not alone in our appreciation of Mr Honda

They also rated the XTZ750 as probably more useful off road (based on lightness) with that and the AT top of the pile for the dirt. The feeling I got from the article was that the older, less powerful, smaller capacity bikes were regarded as the best all-rounders - something for manufacturers of new models to take notice of. That said, what do Bike know, and these were, after all, budget options. Did you notice they put a picture of one of the newer Tigers in - I would have thought you'd be lucky to get one of those for £3000.

All in all, not a bad issue - there is also the second half of the highest biking thing (XT660Rs) and a couple of other Adventure-related snippets.

So what divine authority has made up that list and based on what criteria?

Not the actual ability to do much off road, that's for sure. Probably the same person who elsewhere in the issue considers the Aprillia Trail 650 as a great laugh that even experienced bikers should test ride "before buying that default sportsbike". Don't get me started on the UK's obsession with sportsbikes. Still, that's probably the thinking. Limited (BMW) or virtually non-existant (V-stom and buddies) off road ability is acceptable for these people, so long as the motor puts out more than 90 bhp and can top 130 mph.

    Where was the Transalp??

Well I had a Aprilla Pegasso ( R reg in metallic red/ gold) I hated it then by the time I came to sell it for a Triumph Tiger 900 I loved it.

    Strange what we do.

The Pegasso was a stop gap after being written off whilst riding a Triumph Trophy......oh the pain....leaving your marriage tackle on the petrol tank before leaving the seat is not to be recommended

Walking like John Wayne for 3months isn't good either!
Still enough of the happy memories.

I LIKE THE XRV as my other Landrover is a Landrover

I had a Pegaslow too, fantastic in town but a pain in the neck (literally!) once you get going! A much better bike than the BMUU 650 that was built in the same factory for a while, IMHO.

It was a mainstream magazine, with the bias as above, so the TA is far too "boring/sensible" to be included. I wish one of those journos would bring a TA to one of the British rallies, you know the sort of thing, the ride 200 miles, camp, race, ride home, commute to work on Monday thing.

That would let them really test the Adventure Sport bikes!

(Can we suggest it?? Who do we write to??)
