If you want a taste of rallying on shale roads, get yourself up to Kielder Forest, check the calender first though as it's shut part of the year, I went about 2 miles up the main route in a 900cc Fiat Uno, for a laugh, nearly shook it to bits and loosened a few fillings, had to turn back before I completely knackered the poor thing

    rallying tracks

Yeah, Rossi seems to be able to turn his hand to any top flight motorsport and do well. Anyone can compete, but, to win and at that level. Brilliant. He actually won last week in an indoor rally.

I was told some time back Chad that most of the tracks they use are hired from the forestry. Things may have changed now but earlier on this year there were signs up in the Grizedale forest stating which tracks the bikes can use. I'm up there next week at a rally (only watching) and will check up.

To me they look okay compared to some of the tracks in the pics on this site that have been posted B4.

Has anyone heard of the BOATS - Byways Open to All Traffic and do they still apply?

    Yeah,

Your'e quite correct. The forestry commission charge the rally organisers a certain amount per stage mile, depending on the location.
We used to be able to use the tracks up here until recently till some mindless morons starting setting fires etc. Not a good idea in a forest !!!

For us more seasoned off roaders, a single forestry commision key opens all the gates leading to the forest tracks ( not that I would in any way flaunt the law ) and they go for miles ( so I am told ) into the forest.

    Chad,

we ride all those forests, if you know where to get in it's not a problem as long as you don't go stupid.

    cheers, Bob.

I work closely with Forestry Commission Scotland (FCS) an I know for certain that they take a VERY dim view of 'un-authorised' use of forest tracks by motor bikes/ cars.... They (FCS) will press charges if they manage to hold of anyone going places they shouldn't - but realistically, provided you don't go nuts, up our way they are quite tolerant of folk using the place - just watch out for logging trucks and harvesters

But, as I am a privelidged member of the mountain bike trail building community, I have a key to the barriers, not that i would go ragging my @ or Discovery around up there of course ......

When they kick at your front door How you gonna come?
With your hands on your head Or on the trigger of your gun
When the law break in How you gonna go?
Shot down on the pavement Or waiting on death row?.............
