you should have seen the state i got in with the gears and bakes being the other way round
i can see why people keep these old bikes now

hardly any brakes, rattles and shakes, but what a loverly sound

BEWARE.....these things are very VERY addictive

I`ve ridden my 650 Ural to work every day for the last few months and I`m constantly inventing reasons to go out on it

It's great to ride a bike that requires something of you to get it to perform properly, I think thats why I like thumpers so much OK A Dommie is hardly stone age, but it takes a lot more work to keep her sweet than a twin or multi.

Mate of mine let me have a go on his MZ 125 thingy around twisty single track back lanes in mid Wales. Most fun I'd had in years I was gone for ages and never realised the time. Not fast, but oodles of laughs.

    I've always fancied a 500 Bullet

Unfortunately I was given this rusting "British Classic" and spent £3k restoring it.

What a bag of nails. A real death trap. Allegedly the design was nicked of the Germans after WW2.

My old Boss has an Indian Enfield he bought a few years ago. Certainly sounded and looked the part when we went cruising through Sunday night TV land a couple of months back. By that I mean we went through all the little villages where they film the likes of Midsummer Murders, Vicar of Dibley, past the Chitty Chitty Bang Bang Windmill, skirted Sleepy Hollow and ended up in a cracking pub for lunch

He said it's pretty useless for anything other than that though, and didn't like being told to stop, frequently ignoring his requests for it to do so!

I still fancy flying over to India and either thrashing one around there for a few weeks or riding an "adventure spec" one back over here...now that's a Summer Holiday! Who's coming?!

What's an "adventure spec." version??? By the sound of things riding any Bullet is an adventure...

[Aside: Indian spec. Enfields don't meet EU regulations, so you can't get it registered without quite a lot of modifications. But on the other hand parts are astonishingly cheap. Like 70 quid for a new can. Well, I say "can", more of a tube really. Bit of old drain pipe with some wire wool stuffed up it, probably.]

I'm seriously thinking about trying to get one of these. 2003 on, following takeover, are supposed to be better build quality. That could get the price for a reasonable one to under 2k. For less than a grand you can buy a kit to make it into the Trials version, complete with old fashioned bouncy sprung saddle

Dilemma is whether to go for a more authentic "classic" version (iron head) or the new 'electra' version. The older one has a style that appeals, but the newer motor is more suited to my mechanical ineptitude, and it also comes with a disc brake (I think braking is one area where I can definitely do without period character!)

    classic:

    electra:
flat out on utterly inappropriate tackle
