Please help, I still want a Buell Uyl

Can you please persuade me that my 06 TA is far better than a Buell Uly.

I've had the TA for around 6 months now, and it is a great bike for getting to work every day, nice smooth engine, and a doddle to filter through traffic, which I have to do every day across half of Oxford. However it has no charisma, it's not the prettiest of bikes and to be honest is a bit dull, BUT it does everything I need of a bike and probably more.

However I've seen a Uly with 4k miles just in my price range, ridden one before and was awesome, not at all smooth on tickover, I guess not as good filtering through dense traffic, but looks great and certainly has loads of character.

I know to buy the Uly is the wrong decision but it has a soul that the TA will never have. I will take it for a test ride this weekend and I hope I will be put off by it, however I know more than likely I will buy it, can you put me off going for a test ride.

    F800GS ...broom broom yeah!!!

    Hmm, have both.

(Also, abbreviate Ulysses to Uly rather than Uyl, just to satisfy my pedantic desires... )
It's not the age, it's the mileage...

    Horses for courses

I have an RD04 Africa Twin so similar engine to your transalp which i love to bits i also have a 2000 Varadero which is a storming bike.

Both of these bikes would probably be described by the mags as slightly Dull typical Honda.

To me the excitement of a ride is the smoothness, the quietness, the knowledge that my bike is very reliable, and very good at its chosen job.

I like to enjoy the countryside and be part of the ride as i look around. Hondas allo wyou to do this, becuase frankly they have no real riding faults or quirks.

I have ridden the Uly, i liked it a nice bike but that stupiud fan cutting on all the time, incredibly slow and deliberate gearbox, heavy clutch and dubious build qualiyty would all get to me very quickly. It would intrude upon the enjoyment of the ride. Some like loud pipes, i had them for years on sports bikes but again in my opinion they interfere with the peace that i find on the bike.

So i would stick with the Transalp, spend the money on ferry tickets and fuel and use what you already have. The Honda certainly will not let you down

doesn't bode well for a bike who's name you can't even spell, I've corrected my posting

I'll say follow your heart (or Wallet )

Nowt wrong with the TA, but i bet the Buel has loads more character - not an easy thing to find in a machine.

Never ridden one, but if you like it, i say go for it

And clearly that's one of the most important considerations hey?!

I rode a Uly when they first came out (bought a 1200GS in the end, but that's another story) and nearly dropped it leaving the dealer's car park - the steering lock is pathetic. OK on the open road but I too filter through traffic every day (two-up) and the restricted lock combined with the (for me) too-tall seat meant it would never suit me. It also felt top-heavy compared to the GS.

I found the engine to be punchy but rough (compared to the 1150GS I had at the time) and I had no faith in the bike's ability to either last a typical British winter without looking 10 years old or to actually stay running with no bits falling off for a year. Nice idea, decent-looking bike, but not what I wanted/needed. (Well, actually it was what I wanted but not what I needed).
