I ride to work every day, wife on the back, rain or shine, hot or cold. The only day I cried off was the day last week (week before?) when it snowed - our road doesn't get cleared but does have just enough traffic to pack the snow down into something really slippery. Having dropped a bike in the snow a couple of years ago I know my limits and the wife has brittle bones (osteoporosis) so doesn't bounce too well.
In fact winter commuting is why I bought the Transalp - my main bike starts to dissolve when the salt appears. No, it's not a Suzuki - it's German.....
We have a car for shopping, carrying big stuff around etc but it doesn't get used much. Drives me mad sitting in traffic thinking 'I should be on the bike'.
shopping, and nights out when I put my glad rags on and take me mates are the time i miss not having a car
shopping, well I truly thank tesco for home delivery, makes my life easier
and the big night outs only happen maybe once every other month so it is feasible jsut to get a ahire car for 2 or 3 days.
Am thinking of getting a camper van tho, so might join the ranks of having another option. Just need somewhere to live![]()

I have got 2 cars on the drive and still use my bike daily for the 90mile round trip commute to work. In fact I got the bike coz of the commute and only use one of the cars when I will be travelling from office to office with equipment- about 5 days a year.
Its on days like yesterday that I just love the bike - M6 closed North and South at Junction 29-31. Everyone else at work depressed looking at 3-4 hour journeys home - not me - zip through the traffic, down the back lanes I have previously explored coz I can and its fun and home in about 15 mins longer than usual![]()
2001 Transalp XLV650. Faithful old friend still chugging away nearly 100,00miles
2007 Varadero XLV1000. Now you're torquing but sadly gone to another forum member. One of the best bikes - period.
Yamaha XT660r - slowly getting it ready for some big adventures
Yep, just me and my bikes... Haven't owned a car in my life.
Don't need one either, I can do a lot of shopping before I fill up a pair of zegas, and commuting as I do into dead center Amsterdam every day, a car just isn't an option.
After my last crash (nov 2005) my boss made a half-joking remark about it being time I got a car, so I half-jokingly said okay if you're paying the parking tickets... (20-25 euro per day, 5 days a week, oi)
Nothing more was said, so I got another bike.![]()
We do have a little company car for things like hauling servers around, but I think I haven't driven more than the short end of 200 km last year.
Snow is the one thing that can stop me, though I've been known to have a go anyway.![]()

Haven't come across an insurmountable problem yetwell certainly nothing a few top boxes, 8 panniers, 2 tank bags, 4 rucksacks and 1500 metres of bungie cord wont solve lol.
