A mate just gave me a great tip

    I have a mate YES I DO HONESTLY !!!!

He has a BMW GS1100 and is allways away travelling around europe. I asked him how he does it camping or Hotels and does he cook his own food or eat out

He has a hybrid idea !!! He told me that if you look at the costs of going travelling after machine prep and maintanence are covered, they are

Daily Fuel Use - Nothing you can do about this cost, apart from get a pushbike

Accomadation - Hotel better but more expensive than camping

Food - Cook your own far cheaper than restaurant/Cafe

He expalined to me that in his experience most campers seemed to eat out which somewhat defeats the object of cheap living.

He stays in Hotels but has a Trangia which he brings into the room and cooks his own food. Apparently the Trangia is low fumes and smell, cook by an open window.

Reckons he gets a good nights kip, far better than camping and cheap food.

Seems a bloody good idea to me, i am definetly going to try this

    Hmmmmm.

I subscribe to the opposite idea to be honest, and a tried and tested method at that. Still end up spending roughly the same I guess, but I prefer the whole camping thing as a rule.

Take a tent and camp wherever you go...average night was €6 or about £4 on my last big trip. Spend the money you've "saved" on something nice to eat and a load of beers to wash it all down while you relive the days riding.
After 8 hours in the saddle, a big feed and as many beers as you can handle (and a few more on top) you have absolutely zero trouble sleeping!

And for me, there's nothing like poking your head out of a tent into the fresh air in the morning.

He said only use a Trangia the other stoves would be too dangerous for this and too much smoke and smell

Not sure if this would go down to well in the local 5-Star Hotel
They call him "Ze Quiet one"
I listen to what the rice crispies tell me to do

Also love camping and generally roughing it, the idea of a nice hotel bed would not go amiss on a wet cold night when you tired and knackered.

I have a Trangia and like to cook up a drop of porridge in the morning when staying in hotels.
Last year when after a camping trip to Croatia/Bosnia I was heading back for the ferry through Germany and took to a hotel during a whopper thunder storm.
Being a veggie and in Germany don`t mix so out comes the stove and on goes the porridge. I accidently knocked the stove and had a bit of a moment. The result was a new pattern to the carpet.
A quick exit and a lash up the motorway. Lucky the proprietor didn`t take my details.

Dude I was brought up in Scotland by parents from Yorkshire and, as my Dad says, "A Yorkshireman is essentially the same as a Scotsman...only meaner" so I know entirely where you're coming from! I earn decent money too, but I'm not one to part with it on a whim!

I still prefer my way round. Then if it's proper filthy weather or you're feeling a bit flush and fancy a treat you can always book into a hotel!
