xrv_jim is taking the lead on designing the flyer that will be used for the Picture Rally. We need to include the Charity we will be supporting. This will also be included in all the Picture Rally literature and application forms. So obviously we need to agree this one asap.
The poll will run until the 20th March. This gives a little more than 3 weeks for people to get voting.
Obviously all are good causes and we would love to support them all but the one with the most votes at midnight on the 20th of March will be this years nominated charity. I'd also like the charity to be connected in some way to a member or members of the site. So with that in mind there's three to vote on and an option to nominate your own charity. If you do click 'other' please please please remember to state what charity you have in mind.
What about a charity more motorbike related? There's that one that sends bikes to Africa that Miss P was doing (www.rideafrica.co.uk), for example.
I think the big charities - breast cancer, heart disease etc - have their own events so we should avoid those.
I'm personally opposed to any charity that hires those charity muggers in London who try to get you to sign a direct debit and are rude to you if you refuse, yet are paid mercenaries one day for one charity and another for the next.
There's also road safety charity Brake (http://www.brake.org.uk/), which is a possibility. I knew the woman who set that up after a lorry fell on her mum's car, killing her.
I think we shoud scrap this voting now (sorry Alpslapper) and have a discussion first about the sorts of charities we want on the short list. We also need to know a bit more about them to be able to make a decision.
Otherwise the winner will be "Other" and that isn't going to help.
nb. I chair a charity myself - my union's charity to help widows, orphans and members in need - which means I make a lot of decisions about buying wheelchairs and beds and helping families fleeing domestic violence or facing eviction etc, as well as issues of fundraising. I'm not suggesting it as a benficiary I just think we've gone for headline charities and not thought through how our site might be better linked with a more appropriate charity.
The Charity Commission lists motorcycle charities here: http://www.charitycommission.gov.uk...ion=2&submit=+Run+Search+&OpArea=K&area_of_op=
:
The charities ainclude these: BIRSTALL URBAN MOTORCYCLE PROJECT FOR YOUTH LIMITED KICKSTART MOTORCYCLE PROJECT LIMITED MAG FOUNDATION LIMITED MOTORCYCLE OUTREACH LIMITED - http://www.motorcycleoutreach.org/ NORFOLK MOTORCYCLE MUSEUM THE BRITISH MOTORCYCLE CHARITABLE TRUST THE MARTLETS MOTORCYCLE PROJECT
Riders for health for me please Did an end2end run for them last year. Bike related, and a worthy cause. I know it's not a 'home based' charity, but we are soooo much better off than those in Africa. Bottom line, who ever gets our dough will deserve it
I would like to see NABD up there. They get disabled bikers back on the road, how would you feel if you had an accident through no fault of your own and it threatened your chances of riding your bike ?

Like it Bob. They have a rally in May, which means they'll have another one next year. I say we put that in diary and turn up to present however much we have raised.
The reason I put those 3 particular charities up is because we currently have 3 people from here directly associated with them in the form of actively trying to raise sponsorship at this moment in time. I felt we could back them up with any money raised from the picture rally, and let the board decide who we nominate via a poll.
The 'others' can be simply added up and if an 'other' has more votes than one of the named three then thats who we support this year. So if people feel it should be for example the youth bike project then simply name that project and we'll count the votes on the 20th March.
As I said theres no question that all three are extremely worthy causes. All the others we could mention are also doubtless equally as worthy. There will always be the debate of better known versus lesser known charities.
Another key reason for choosing the current 3 that are on the board is time. We don't have it on our side this year. We need to get things organised and ready for May so don't have the luxury to debate things at length for weeks.
I'm hoping that if this year works out we can make it an annual event, have a proper committee set up that will research charities to be associated with and be able to leave a poll up and running for a few months before the event next year so things will be much more unrushed and democratic.
I'm just concerned about the amount of work we need to get done and the time this will take if we're going to make a decent go of this.
Hence taking the rather expedient line of looking at the charities people are currently trying to raise money for and polling for them.
I'm more than happy to scrap the poll and debate this further if people feel this needs to be done - my fear is we'll still be discussing the pro's and con's of each charity on Christmas Day never having finally reached a decision at all.
This year is a bit unusual in that time is against us and we simply WONT be able to run this with the attention to detail that we'd want but if we make a success of this, and run it as an annual event then from next year on we'll be on top of our game for sure
I'm sorry alpslapper but I've put other as well, only because I have 2 charities that I do alot of work for and I know breast cancer care is well supported, my other charity is mountain rescue which recieves no government funding in England and Wales and in particular the team which i am a member because we are a really good rescue team. So my vote would go there Western Beacons mountain rescue team (and we pick up of roaders when they are injured so sort of motorbike related in a round about way)
ok firstly all the 'national and international' charities are all well funded and have their own in house marketing and PR teams to make sure you the public are very aware they exist and that we should be supporting them so please consider a smaller charity that doesn’t get this sort of help and is still very much in need of funding.....
on a personal view I am very apposed to any charity that is hell bent on only helping 'offenders in need of rehabilitation' these people commit crimes and then are given all the breaks just because they were bad in the first place... this sucks.. To many GOOD kids are not getting the chances and help in life they DESERVE because of this type of charity medalling.
My vote is for a motorcycle related charity such NABD as they help put riders back on the road with practial help and this should be rewarded.
quick note on African charities.... more and more scrutiny is being put on the growing number of African charities as its now established that these charities are in fact doing what is 'legal responsibility' of the state and the money the state hijacks is being ploughed back in buying guns used for terrorising the population and starving them of medical treatment, it has become a vicious circle and is escalating at an alarming rate... all legit, bonafide and necessary charities in Africa are registered with charities commission.

i'm with you for the most part on this - but from experience there are a lot of bad kids who are really good kids who only need a hand out of the mire!
everyone deserves a chance, gud un's bad un's and even xrv.org members
how about a charity for biker injuries, legal help, etc and if there isnt one maybe one could be started. am sure there are a few chaps out there that have been in an accident and could do with some help!!!
I voted for devon air ambulance - I assume its Devon as opposed any other air ambulance coz someone here has something to do with the charity.
Sadly one day someone on here might be eternally grateful to an air ambulance because they literally will save their life. If its not someone on here it will be bikers up and down the country that are saved.
But, I don't really mind who wins the poll and they will get my fiver/tenner or whatever anyway. Is their a way we can do that gift in aid thing and get the tax we all pay for the charity as well?
Now thats a good point well made. There is a committee of 4 working behind the scenes to get this up and running and the money issue is one that has to be addressed.
This post has gone on too long with no silliness... sooo
I Vote for the Shocks for Anubis charity...it is a wonderful charity that will provide poor neglected Anabases with new progressive springs and Wp rear shocks....
I'll get my hat,,,,:help: :dontknow: :dontknow:
(please note I did not actually vote… so the poll is still fine)

I voted other but it was for the NADB. I think a bikers charity is more appropriate and we can head up to their festival in May next year and present a cheque.
If we decide to do it, maybe we should get in touch anyway and see if there is anything practical we can do before then, such as helping out with a disabled bikers' off-road day?
It may not always be the fault of a bike. I was driving a 38 tonne truck when I lost my leg but NABD helped me get back on my bike and I do nearly everything that I used to do. :thumb:
Sorry to say but I really do think that the whole voting here is a bit unfair. Surely a more fairer option would have been to simply ask first for charities that could go into the voting pot and then after a reasonable time set up the poll to vote on?

Fair point - but for this year, for expediency as time is so short, theres no need to actually ask this time round - people are able to put their own charities directly into the pot
Others can see whats to vote on - add their vote, or vote for another.
Fair enough - we can organise it better for next year . If people use the 'other' option their vote will be very clearly represented.
There will always be people who feel left out - if a selection of charities is agreed on for a poll this will by definition leave out other charities that people have a vested interest in and would like to have seen in the poll but wont be included.
Nameing your charity in 'other' means none will be left out if you bother to vote. Perhaps Im missing something but it seems very straight forward to me. With such a short amount of time, Im trying to make it as democratic as possible. (and as I said the reason for picking the 3 I did was because these were already on the board and members have a direct connection to them, but I included 'other' because I knew people would have other charities in mind.).
I'm keeping an updated tally so if people actualy bothered to vote they can ensure the charity that will be supported is a true reflection of the majority of the baords wishes. NaBD was suggested in other and is now a joint favourite. I cant see what the problem is to be honest.
Yes we can do it differently and better for next year with more time and planning but for this year we just need to get it moving so things are ready for May and hopefully lay on a really good challenging rally that will be fun, interesting, eduactional, and help raise a bit of money for the site and our nominated charity.
Still only twenty odd votes cast but several hundred viewings, and over 200 active members - maybe the reality is there isn't that much interest after all. People love argueing and talking about it but when it comes to doing thats a different matter. Ho Hum. I hope Im wrong.

Welcome to the wonderful world of internet publishing... lots of talker's and SFA do'ers..
think the issue Kymmy is pointing out is that any charity listed in say the first 3 will always receive more votes than a charity added on the last day, however the time difference will not be taken into account so its a little biased.
I voted Devon Air Ambulance but that's really as I lived in that area and know the sterling work they do.
However now reading through there are more options and had NABD been an option I would ticked that as very worthwhile charity.
We have 2 members that have directly benefited from them 12inch and Boboneleg and I've heard of the great things they've done. Getting people back on a bike after an accident is great work.
So I'd like to change my vote.
