    Re: Discovery eek

Our 300TDI Defender needs the tappets doing every 5000 miles, they are all out a bit, loses a bit of power & turbo loses a bit of whistle when pulling - The vehicle only does lots of short journeys although I cannot see that this will affect valve clearances.

Two years ago a noticable tapping suddenly developed from the top of the engine, it turned out to be a valve 'cap*' had disintergrated and giving a greater clearance on that valve. The 'cap' or it's remains were never found....
A new cap + one spare came in at the grand total of about a quid (inc vat!!!).

Luckily the tappets are easy to get at. Worth checking before it goes to the garage.

The water gallery gasket can leak (a 50p gasket behind the waterpump - front of the block), when this fails the engine loses pressure, overheats and distorts the block.....
    Worth checking!

A (previously) snapped belt may not be as terminal as it sounds, generally the pushrods will bend or snap the tappets before the valves bend.

Quite a few of the 300tdi's (inc ours) required a modified timing housing and pulley's worth checking if yours has this mod, part's are cheap (subsidised by LR?) but is quite involved to change.
This modification was required as the belt had a habbit of running off centre from the pulley's and wearing itself away!

Otherwise sound vehicles apart from leaks, corrosion poor build & quality control....

    * 'cap' = the valves have a small mushroom shaped cap between the top of the valve & the rocker (never seen 'em before)

Honestly, what other changes are there between the two?

I alway's thought it was pretty much plumbing work, manifold's breather hoses etc.

At least the 300's don't need the gunge blown from the breather hoses every oil change....

its totally different... nearest swap parts is the block but they are different!... 300's were the product of a joint venture and had input form everybody and their dog which meant it was a total mish mash... F~@k me half the electrics are from the transit for gods sake.
(yes all you disco owners pull out the pre-heater relay and see what logo is on the back!)
