    Passport advice-Uk to Ireland

    Hey folk,
MrsX and I were talking about an Ireland trip (or Romania). But we realised that her UK visa will be expiring in the next 2 months (which means it will be in the UK government's hands for god knows how long). So do we (as Australians) need a passport to go from the UK to Ireland? In practice and in fact?

That page says that Australian passport holders do not need a visa to visit as a tourist for a stay of less than 3 months. The UK visa will be irrelavent until re-entry back to the UK. But you will need your passport.

Hopefully an Irish member can be more definitive. In my experience...
    From mainland Britain, almost certainly.
From Northern Ireland, most unlikely (unless you get stopped while there).
    Curious, isn't it?

i've heard that you can get without a passport, particularly if it on the boat. If you travel to northern ireland you can travel to the south without any id. We who live in the north are intitled to own both irish and UK passports at once.

Don't know if it's the same for Aussies but UK citizens travelling to Ireland by ferry do not need a passport but do need some sort of photographic ID. ie: Driving licence etc. Although we have been for three of the last five years and have never been asked for anything apart from out tickets.

Passport checks are non existent on the boat fom UK - Ireland.
At the airport they wave you through as long as you have a euro passport in your hand.

Chances are you'll be accused of being South African or English once your here though ...
