I agree - brilliant book. If you liked this one then you will probably like 'First Light' by Geoffrey Wellum - about the authors first hand experiences of flying Spitfires in WWII.

Somebody did it all long before Ted Simon!!!!

For a good read, try "One Man Caravan" by Robert Edison Fulton.

    Review
"A fascinating historical chronicle that can be enjoyed by motorcyclists and non-motorcyclists alike." living, this book is worth reading." -- Motorcycle Online

"Every now and then a book turns up which looks distinctly dull, yet which turns out to be so engrossing that you read it in a single sitting. One Man Caravan is such a book."

"For anyone who's thought about riding around the world, but who might've been put off by the thought of inconveniences brought on by war and national rivalries, Fulton's book might just convince you that it's possible, after all. And if the words aren't enough, there are 68 photographs to provide additional inspiration. The world is a very interesting place, indeed, and even more so from the seat of a motorcycle." City Bike Magazine

''These are the days that must happen to you'' Dan Walsh

This is the one that makes me wanna go, leave, vanish tomorrow.

If you read bike mag you probably got it for free cos its bits he wrote for the mag, a compulation.
It starts off as just another ride report, he even says his mom would skip the first few chapters, but then he gets into the flow of things and the fun begins.
He writes in a very unique style, lots of rhyme and rhythm and describes places and situations as only Dan can.

"For me, Chile will always be South America’s supermodel sister – very beautiful but too long, too skinny, and too expensive to ride, and despite the groovy exterior, unpleasantly right-wing underneath."

"I get my bum pinched by a tranny, my pocket picked by a grifter and get a gun pulled on me by a one-eyed, one-armed midget who’s upset cause I winked at him. These are the days that must happen to you."

I found Dans book difficult to follow at first, but found it addictive and could not put it down

Aye, its more about his story telling than knowing where he was, at what time and with whom.

It's too hot to sleep again - so I've just started reading:

    To Dakar and Back :

Here's what the blurb says: The Paris-Dakar Rally is without doubt the most arduous and notorious off-road motorsport event on the planet. Considered one of the world's top five adventures, the human drama that unfolds each January is unparalleled. Tales of danger, blinding sandstorms, endless vistas of towering dunes, incredible hardships, trgedy and triumph have greatly contributed to the aura and mystique of the rally. In To Dakar and Back, Hacking, with De Clercq recount the three weeks of blood, sweat and tears that took him from the glitz of Paris tothe hinterland of North West Africa.

Re: The Great XRV Library Thread

got most of the famous bike travel books now, still lots to go though. they can be a bit a bit obscure or expensive so i make the mrs find them for me for xmas/birthdays etc

MOTORCYCLE HANDBOOK by chris scott, who doesnt have this bible?

THE RUGGED ROAD by theresa wallach, and ONE MAN CARAVAN by robert fulton, great reads, of times long gone now (he invented the 'skyhook' pilot recovery system [seen in the end of bond film 'thunderball'] dont you know)
i must get the book by the two germans with the outfit now.

THESE ARE THE DAYS THAT MUST HAPPEN TO YOU by dan walsh, (called something else in america because its a quote from i think hunter s. thompson and copywright and all that), a good book but take your time to read it bit at a time because it goes on a bit, gets very samey. feels like half way through he cant be bothered and wallows in booze and drugs for a year, great for him but not so good to read about

MI MOTO FIDEL by 'cant remember' riding around cuba, one of the best bike travel books ive read, and its a shame (not for the cubans, probably!) that america lifted the blanket trade embargo just after his tour and the cuba described here will be gone by now

MOTORCYCLE DIARIES by che, YAWN and they're only on a bike for a 1/4 of the book

LOIS ON THE LOOSE by lois pryce, another great book, better than RED TAPE AND WHITE KNUCKLES which was good but had a more pro tour feel to it i thought, i preffered the "WTF am i doing"? ness to the first one

INTO AFRICA by sam manicom, i like the way sam writes and i'll be buying the next in the series soon

also got TRIUMPH AROUND THE WORLD, WAY TO GO, couple by nick sanders, some more books that i cant remember, i'll have an excuse to read them again!

Re: The Great XRV Library Thread

Having spent some 40 years in the book manufacturing and publishing industry- ranging from the days of hot metal and etched plates, to titles to the printers 'on disc' – thousands of titles have passed through my hands.

When I retired, I cleared my shelves of thousands of books – I stocked up the local school and even used to leave a box out for the milkman!

The one book I cherished, that disappeared after being lent to a friend, who passed it onto another friend, and so on, was RICHARD LA PLANTE, HOG FEVER.
Anyone with any enthusiasm for biking will enjoy this book – the fact that the bike in question is a HD, is irrelevant.
