I think the campaigner is shocked that "it has come to this........". That kind of attitude.

I have to say myself, when I read the article, I am shocked. Shocked that society has gone that sour.

I don't know if you saw that post I made the other night about the fact that I simply have to accept that my bike will be, eventually, stolen; set on fire; vandalized; stolen from (accessories) and that when the police turn up, I've got to restrain myself when they say "there's nothing we can do". This will happen to me, because it's a high chance statistic in the UK. And it makes me barf.

I think that's the problem, what the woman in the article is saying is - surely we haven't arrived in place? The point of no return, where there is no other solution? Er, have we? Education (i.e. prevention) - not retaliation. Do you know what I mean?

I don't think she is saying no-one should protect themselves............

The article does state that they are "outraged by the new invention" and not outraged that its got to the point where this invention is needed.

Much as I'd like to see the b@st@rds maimed for life I can also imagine that this would simply enrage them further and you would then have a murder to deal with in stead of a rape. Really shame that it has come to this though.

It's appalling subject anyways.

I've worked briefly at a rape crisis centre in Charleston, South Carolina back in 1994.

Some of the stories are horrendous.

And some of the people there that learned to forgive their assailents, mon dieu......................

I think if anything at all has to be fabircated it should be some kind of chastity belt. Why?

Well, my belief comes from my father who is a former chief constable. He used to pro-everything - corporal punishment, no A Class drugs, lock anyone up.

But then after 34 yrs of service, personal sacrfice, medals and endless politics - he caved in.

When he retired he just said "none of fight fire with fire works".

My dad now wants all drugs to be lagalised. Why, because the market for drugs would crash and crime (to support drug prices) would collapse. He said that the all the stats they have on corporal punishment in foreign countries showed persistant re-offending. And lastly, back to our subject, more defendants DIE or face retaliation from their attacker or face custodial sentences themselves when they strike back.

What I am saying is, you wear a contraption that rams a nail thru someone's penis they are going to pull a knife out and stab you in the heart. So, rape and then GHB/death.

I would support something half way: some kind of device that planted a microchip into his knob that allowed GPS tracking (I know, light years away, it sounds ridiculous, let's all laugh......however). Or some kind of electrical shock to get the offender to stop what he's doing and then he is covered in a fluorescent dye or horrendous smell that would identify him later.

I'm telling you, most of the people in hold ups who pull a gun when they see another gun - get shot.

1 - Prevention with education. 2 - obstructing the offence. 3 - immediate termination of the offence with guarantee of follow up and capture of offender.

Sadly, very sadly, there will be a trend I believe in deaths (minumum: brutal harm) following the rape of women using this contraption.

Well, Well!....The best part of thirty years ago I was an IBM Sevice Engineer (When I had a proper job!)...One day one of my workmates has been fixing a photocopier at the Patent Office and brought back a copy of a patent application for an Anti-Rape Device.......Made our eyes water !!!! .

It was a device that fired a sort of mini harpoon with barbs into the mans penis...............A measured response to the act of rape in my opinion.

BUT.............The possibility for abuse /what if she forgot / Bunny Boilers..................

PLUS...The response of any male to pain like that...........

I think the main question should really be that why are the figures so high for rape in that country.

What are women supposed to do though?

1. Wait for the goverment/police to get thier act together
2. Insist that all rapists get castrated
3. Carry arround a gun with them and shoot the idiot who tries to rape them
4. Insert a hidden little device that quite simply is no harm to anyone apart from a rapist that might save thier life (remember that a lot of rapes end with murder)

I've shown this article to a few other people off XRV (Yes I do have a life off the forum) and the men all say no to the device, when I ask them why they say that they wouldn't like it attached to them..I then ask them as it's a anti-rapist device are they planning to rape anyone???

First I agree with lootch... I have taught self defense for many years and the first thing i tell woman is that if you are going to fight back you fight back to take em down PERMANENTLY, cus if you try for that you are likely to fall short and just hurt em.. if you go for just hurt em you are likely to fall short and piss them off.. Remember, rape is often a POWER crime not a sexual one... So in this case if some one is sick enough to be a rapist then why not beat the woman to death you have just taken the power way from the sick Fck and he will want it back in any way possible.. .. Like you said a lot of rapes end in murder.. and now the psychopath did not get his power trip. It will only escalate things! For example i do not teach "kick em in the balls".. IT DOES NOT WORK! I teach to put your keys/thumb into the trachea . this work, it takes em down.. even if you bugger it up you have done a lot of damage ..it is a much better deterrent... and is actually very hard to defend against (unlike poke his eyes out.. this does not work either)!!!

Two the hygiene of this device is a major concern and could cause the woman significant issues, we are talking poor people here who are unlikely to be able to bathe daily, and (depending on where culturally will not either, maybe weekly), all you have to do is look at the initial rates of infection with the IUD in the 1st world and you have my reasons there. This really is a huge worry

Three; WHY THE F&(%$£* should the woman have to remember everyday to stick something in her? Will this work during menstruation? WE all know machines to some extent and dont work to some extent the way we want em to.. What is the percentage of accidental firings and what does this do to the woman. Who will pay for her surgery when that happens.

Four. I think Kymmy, your number 3 is safer..This thing give you one shot.. not good in my book! Say they guy just penetrates with a finger first.. then see #1. With a gloch 9mm you get 16 tries.. with this thing only : one.. I'd take 16. (I agree fully with number 2 btw). yeah kill the fcker


Five:What about AIDS/HIV,Almost by definition the woman will be bleeding during the rape. The there is a small chance that if the guys "pulls" out or does not ejaculate (which is a common occurrence in rape (as it is a power thing now sexua)l) the risk of transmission could be lower then if there is a BLOOD TO BLOOD contact: as would almost definitely occur with an in situ penile piercing ..

Six I agree that woman should be able to protect her self in anyway she has to .. so I do not say this product should not be available, but it just dose not strike me as an effective deterrent.. Besides by the time the fcker has beaten her enough to get her on the ground with "access" isn't a bit late? see #4 (wow i sound like a gun fanatic dont I .. well i actually hate guns.. but rape pisses me off.. there is a reason i start teaching self defense.. a friend of mine was badly raped and died of her injury 3days later.)

My personal choice would be #3, but not all women are that inclined. Also I believe it's illegal in SA to carry a concealed weapon, but not an unconcealed licenced weapon.
