    suggestions for web site server

Any one got suggestions on the best to use? It is just for a personal site but used as a professional profile site. I would like to use my own domain name.

    Suggestions?
also where did you guys (DaveS, Jenna/kymmy, ahh others with sites) purchase your domain name from?

I tend to buy my domains from Cheapnames. They have very good support and the web control panel is very comprehensive.

For years I've used DIRECTNIC for all my domain names apart from the UK ones, for them I use 1&1.

In the end the domain name holder is just a pointer to the NameServers that hold your site, nothing more, nothing less. What's really crucial is where your domain is hosted for that I have a VPS here as the shared hosters just kept giving me problems with other users on the shared system taking up all the resources

1&1 keeps comming up so I may go with them for domain registration..

BY having a VPS you mean you have your own server and you dont go through a host????

1ad1 also do hosting packages as well as name registration.

A VPS is a virtual server (normally a high end server split by software into 4/8 virtual servers, each has their fair share of memory/cpu/bandwidth and disk space.

For pure web a normal server would have been pure overkill for us and would have cost 60+ UKP a month, the VPS gives us 500GB bandwidth a month, 15gb HDD space, root access and in the last 2 years has only ever been down for a total of 36 hours (with half of that time for planed updates)

All that for £20 a month

I've used several ones and found 1&1 to the best so far. I never had any downtime with them in 2 years of running my shop website. Their prices are reasonable and they offer some good basic packages which are good if you have limited knowledge regarding setting the site up. But if you have a bit more knowledge you can take their basic framework and change it how you like.
