    Knee update

Some of you may remember I did my knee in just before the National playing fat dads' footy. It didn't recover as planned - I mistook that for age. The ligaments got better but there was something crunching. Eventually I got an X-ray last week and today I spoke to the doctor. I have some loose bits and bobs floating about but also "a small piece of bone sticking out".
A operation will put me on crutches for four to six weeks, says the doc.
Still, the good news is he reckons that if I can walk without pain now, which I can, maybe I should forget about an op and just try to exercise again and build up the strength and just live with it.
So i'm up the park for a jog later after about ten weeks of lounging about and putting on half a stone.
    Hurrah!

Your doctor is just trying to get the waiting list down

I would get a second opinion on this. Sounds like this could be fixed with key hole surgery, better now than later.

Sometimes we believe something because it's what we want to hear.

An expert is only as good as the questions you ask them.

Get a second opinion from a specilist

    Hummmmmmm

Have an op,get rid of the bits+bobs+piece of bone, few weeks on crutches, phisio, then back to normal.
    or
Carry on with bits+bobs+piece of bone(presumably loose) floating about in the knee joint, getting jammed now and again, perhaps prematurely wearing out the knee joint.

Still, if you just carry on I suppose the operation waiting list targets look better

BTW, after my last knee op (after a big off) the specialist advised swimming or cycling to build strength, definitely no 'impact' exercise i.e. running.

Anyway, whatever the decision, I wish you good luck and a speedy recovery.

YOur all nuts, I would try physio myself and in fact that is exactly what I have done for the past 4 months. If pain and discomfort continues then think about surgery.

As far as waiting list targets most of the surgeons I know couldn't give a toss about the targets that's the managers jobs.

    Re: Knee update

I rekon you need a proper MRI scan to determine whats really up. In fact I go in today for cruciate reconstruction and cartlidge op at BUPA private as employers coughed up the 5k for the op as I did it playing rugby for them not lookin forward to being put back in pain, but pi**ed off with hobbling around for the last 3 months so heres to getting better and being able to ride my bike again. The NHS said it would be 6 to 9 months for urgent classed cases so the firm took it as good financial sense to get me back on the road to recovery asap.
I would get it checked properly first mind even if it means a private MRI.
Oh yes my recovery period before I get back on the job is 6 months, more bordom but at least I can get out and lose the extra nearly stone I put on now up to 20 stone

    Re: Knee update

Went for a very gentle run this morning, no more than 2 and a 1/5 miles and took about 25 minutes so really nice and gentle. Felt great. The cruciate (I think - inner side of the knee) hurt a bit when the hill sloped down left to right but other than that, fine. The actual knee was no problem running. Tops of the legs started to pull from lack of exercise but the knew felt fine.
The knee did clunk a bit when I cycled my daughter to school, but I will see how it does over the next few weeks. I can get to see a specialist if it continues to play up. The main ting for me is that running isn't going to make it any worse, so I can at least exercise again. I have not refereed a rugby match yet this season. I reckon I'll be fit enough in three weeks, as I have been walking four or five miles a day most days throughout this enforced break.

    Re: Knee update

dude the bits may not be from the injury they may only have been loosened by it!

i have osteochondriticdessicans (cant remember where the spaces go!)

this is where bits of bone go crumbly and drop off!!!

mine did and i've had a huge chunk of my right knee removed - you guys may remember i was sat on my ass for ages doing little but watching american chopper and posting on here!!

get it checked just in case matey!

as for bits floating around - you wouldn't fire the bike up if you'd have dropped a nut into the engine - same principle matey!

    glad it's feelin' better tho!!
