Never used muffs, but I'd reckon from a purely psychological point of view, heated grips are better - I feel warm all over when I put mine on, all muffs do is keep what heat is there, in - they don't give you any more to share with the other parts of your body like grips do.
Grips rule!

I remember Maverick used Muffs on his AT (I think) he raved about them. I don't like them but that's just from a looks point of view. Saying that having ridden the AT in all weathers I've had no problems with a Heated Grips / Hand Guards / Decent gloves combo.
Although I've heard heated grips are not good for Gortex gloves - or so I've been told by a mate who could sell sand to the Arabs but cautioned me in purchasing gortex gloves with heated grips....
I'm going on a trip!

I use the Heated grips and the Muffs , It means i can wear my lighter Summer gloves. I have been riding bikes since 1980 and and have used winter gloves, But always found them to be Bulky and a total loss of FEEL of the throttle/clutch/and front brake. The most important things that you need on damp /frosty/slippy roads . Go with them both it,s the best setup.fw750x

Welcome to the club.
The best bit of winter riding advice I can offer is .................
It's no use waiting till you feel cold and then try to heat youself up... don't get cold in the first place - layers - layers -layers ..... try not to get wet , get the waterproofs on at the first sign of rain and good plate of hot porrage before you leave the house.
As far as Heated grips Vs Muffs ........ Grips deffo and muffs if your doing huge mileages , I've tried them they do work but I prefer not to have them. I did not like the impression of "fumbling" inside for the switchgear and also Winter is a time to acknowledge your fellow two wheeled travellers and the muffs made waving a dangerous chore.
And winter is the time when you really have to stop to help another biker in trouble, remember that cold , wet, miserable sod trying to get a signal on a dead mobile at the dark roadside ....... might just be YOU tomorrow.
