    Re: fun and good place

In the 70s I really wanted a snorkel coat.
My mum eventually gave in and agreed to pay 50p a week on the Grattan catalogue.
She rang them up and told me (a 7 year old) that they only had them in brown.
I REALLY wanted a blue one.
But I was desperate so asked her to order it.

It turned up in June. It was too hot for a snorkel coat but I was over the moon.

In a rush to show it off in the school playground I grabbed the parcel from the postman and ran to my school (Elseley Lower in Kilburn).

Playtime eventually came and I ran onto the playground with my parcel in hand.

Crossing onto the playing field I ripped the snorkel coat from it's packaging and put it on under the sun.

It was a hot june day but I didn't care - now I was one of the lads.

I connected the zip and pulled it up to the hood to find....................

It wasn't a snorkel coat but a brown anorak with a fur-lined hood.

    I've been traumatised ever since.

Must have been one of your cheap Mickey Mouse imports.

    Re: fun and good place

my most abiding memory of a snorkle coat was having it zipped right up on a snowy day peering out of the tunnel formed by the hood and feeling warm and snug and very smug when .... WUMPH!!!!!!!! FECKIN HEAT SEEKIN SNOWBALL straight down the hood into my mush i was pissed off at the time but now days i can fully appreciate the accuracy of that shot

Jees Recycler, the trauma of it all... it ain't fair.

Course, when I were a lad, they hadn't invented coats and we took our snowballs straight on the frozen ear, cos we were ard

Actually I so skinny I'd have snapped in the cold so they didn't let me go outdoors until coats had been invented and tested

    Re: fun and good place

My mum bought me one but the fur was orange (I wish I had kept it - I could have sold it to Chad).
I got a job cleaning toilets so I could buy myself and proper blue one.

There was a time when every boy wanted to look like Kenny from South Park and peer out of a snorkel coat with absolutely no idea what was happening on either side.
