    E-Bike Insurance

Just read something on the TRF forum about E-Bike insurance having an exclusion for Green laning.
This policy does not cover racing of any description or being used in any contest, competition, track days, rallies or trials (other than road safety rallies or treasure hunts) or on any other form of racetrack or off-road activity (including green laning).
Anyone insured with them that goes offroad..?
    Thought you were covered..?
Is green laning offroad or onroad as lanes are legal public highways..?

Would be interested to hear your thoughts.

As "green lanes" are highways then you are not off road. I think they would have to have a definitions of both "off road activity" and "green lane" to make your quote from the policy work for them otherwise a lawyer would just pull it to bits as unworkable. I am with ebike and I am pretty certain I don't have that clause. Is it new?

and another thought..... "off road activity" so that would include parking in a supermarket car park, filling station forecourt, private roads on an industrial estate, a driveway, track to a farm or something, in fact any activity on private land.Nah, they must have to define it in the defintions section to make any of that stick.

Austin, you're pretty much thinking along my lines. I checked my cover note which is all I useally carry, and that doesn't say anything about green lanes. I checked on the ebike website where you can login and check policy details. Thats where I got the quote from. I'm going to check the policy they sent me tonight when I get home.
I pretty sure "Green Laning" doesn't have a legal definition but wouldn't really like to be the one to test it in court.

your right, they will always have the upper hand as they will be in the position to decline a claim on the grounds "you were green laning". It would then be a legal case to define what is/isn't green laning. Personally I don't think they would have a leg to stand on but who is going to pursue a claim in the courts if it was for just a few hundred quids worth of bike damage. Might be a different matter if it was a big personal injury claim with a no-win no fee lawyer behind it.

But then again thinking it through, is this a big problem.....

If you're 3rd party then what are the chances of someone nicking it whilst you're greenlaning.
Possibly it could catch fire I guess.
If you're fully comp and going to claim for trashing it then I kind of side with the insurers!

    Re: E-Bike Insurance

There no such thing techincally as a "green lane " its either a Byway (BOAT),UCR or a road .......not legally allowed to ride on footpaths, bridleways ..........as for RUPPS now restricted byway ....best not get started on those
Green lane is just a term used by folk to cover all types of the off road tracks.
They are all roads just that some are not cover in tarmac ie same rules apply as you need tax ,insurance and an MOT
Therefore if they mention greenlaning then there talking toss ! but its insurance company so what did you expect

    Re: E-Bike Insurance

I think the insurance policy defines the insured person as not taking part in motor sports, period, ie moto x, circiut or enduro etc. Irregardless of whether it be on a green lane, circuit or a car park. My understanding is that they do not cover any form of motor sport, only on sections of adopted roads etc where the competitor has to gain access to the highway to reach a controlled section eg trials, rallying etc.

If you were to be involved in a hit whilst green laning, you could say that you were gaining access to a right of way and totally deny you were in any form of competitive sport. They might believe you ???
