    MOT Problem

    Hi folks,

    I have a li'l problem.

I need to get my CB500 MOT'd but I have no way of taking it to the MOT centre without riding it... It has no tax, insurance, and the log book is still with the DVLA, am I allowed to ride it to the centre or will I get pulled over and screwed?

PS: I think I was flashed by a speed camera the other day so I'm not too keen on getting even more points and possibly losing my newly acquired license.

    Thanks, Dave

you need to insure the bike to ride it to the mot centre, but you can ride it too an mot centre without tax as you need to have an mot to tax the thing. then you can get your tax disc with the new keeper section of the log book if you do not have the log book back before you want to tax it, make sure you have booked the mot before setting out though and go straight there,

Bear in mind that most insurance is invalid without and mot (unless by special arrangement)

    Not true. Urban myth.

You must get the bike insured. You can ride it legally to a pre-booked MOT appointment (and back if you fail on something minor). Technically you would have to to ride it home with your new MOT certificate and then go out on foot to buy the tax disc, but I'd go straight from the MOT station to the Post office with my log book and insurance certificate and buy the tax.

    Re: MOT Problem

you can get insurance without a reg number even, if you import a vehicle, so you can get it too a a DVLA centre for inspection and get a reg no

    Re: MOT Problem

As above the MOT must be a booked appointment, not a centre where you queue and you have to take a short route there ........i.e. not go for a detour for brekky on the way!

    Re: MOT Problem

thanks for the help guys, I guess I'll ring up the cheapest company from gocompare.com and explain the situation.

I may as well ring the DVLA as well and see what they say, just in case.

    Thanks guys

No need, just get it insured and get a cover note from them (if you go with Swiftcover you print off your own docs from their site - handy for this sort of thing).

    Step-by-step guide:

    1. Get insurance and have a cover note or certificate in your grubby mitt.
    2. Pre-book MOT at the nearest available test station - make sure they note the Reg No when you book it, just in case.
    3. Fill out a vehicle license application form and stick it in your pocket, along with insurance docs.
    4. Ride the shortest route directly to the MOT station at the appointed time.
    5. Pass the MOT.
    6. Ride the shortest route directly to the nearest Post Office with:
    (a) Your license application form (completed)
    (b) Your insurance docs
    (c) Your shiny new MOT certificate
    (d) Money/cheque/card to pay for the tax disc
    7. Get tax disc
7a. Display tax disc on vehicle
    8. Ride wherever your whim takes you.

All strictly according to the rules, been there, done that many a time - including getting pulled by BiB and checking all the above with them - it's kosher.

    You're welcome

This is spot on advice. Totally legal and fool-proof.
