Q for the medical motorcyclists on 'ere

I've recently been told (& heard on the radio) that one of the reasons that you shouldn't paint a bike helmet is that some paints stop x-rays, & helmets are made so that x-rays can be taken of the head without removing the helmet.

    Is this true?

I thought they phased out lead based paints years ago

That sounds like a huge load of old cobblers to me. The no-paint thing has more to do with polycarbonate helmets being damaged by solvents in paint and making them useless so they fall apart on impact. I can't see that a layer of paint would be particularly impervious to x-rays.

and I think it would take a thicker layer of lead to stop the rays, as far as know its purely a solvents issue making the plastics used in helmets go brittle

Moon it sounds like complete rubbish to me, all helmets would be removed either at the accident site by the paramedics or if unable on arrival to A and E

This is essential really as if you look at the back of your helmet it lends itself to allowing an unconcious head roll around which is not good for the spine and one of the first things that you assess as a medic is the airway and ease of access to an airway is a priority, again this is difficult if not impossible with a helmet on

I think we should all line our helmets with cooking foil though, that should stop the alien voices telling us to do silly things.
