    Any screeders on here?

    As the title says.

I'm looking for advise on prepping for, the normal depth of, and someone that can do the job! Its a garage floor 5x3m in Darlington.

Wondered what would be the best thing to do with the gap around the existing slab in terms of prep. I have left the old slab in and pushed the walls out to get more space.

The old slab is about 2-3inches thick straight onto hardcore and clay. I would guess at some sort of dpm and maybe thin insulation boards between the concrete and the screed?

To prep for screed and fill the floor back up to the walls is there anything worth doing other than getting some hardcore and concrete back in to something like level?

Next question would be; how much is sensible if I start ringing round for quotes?

Hey chad while I'm on topic:

That wall................came out ok I think for a first effort!

for doing that myself!! through the middle of winter!!

didn't learn though. Doing the garage now ........through the middle of winter!!

Summer is for fun stuff like riding bikes!!

council house swaps, building advice what a forum. Oh i know yes that screed thing, you fill it with concrete and drag a bit of wood over i think.
phone one of those blokes with a concrete mixer to bring some concrete around first though,

Why do you want to screed the floor of a garage ?
I used to labour for a screeder and all the floors were at least 4 inches thick, and you will need to lay on concete for support. I don't know of a way of reinforcing a screed floor.
I would think you would be better laying concrete with some reinforcing put in it. You can do it youself, hire a mixer, couple of mates, 4 inch thick for light car, better with 6 inch. Hard core base, all the building rubble you got.

If you want to insulate, Get the thick dmp and make a sort of bowl, leave plenty of slack, the 50mm polystyrene sheet in the bottom and up the sides and fill as above.

Now what have I told you before...? Winter is fun too, you just need to buy that XR400 you've been promising yourself.

Give me a shout if you need a labourer or tea maker.

Hey thats my bus shelter your dis'in!!

It kept the snow off me!!.......but they never came to take me away!

I was just intending to re-instate the concrete floor back to the walls and then insulate and damp proof, and then a layer of screed for a finish and level floor for painting, or however I decide to finish it. I think screeding can be as little as 60mm thick in some circumstances but all stuff I needed to check.

I have a mixer etc and happy to tackle concrete myself but just thought I'd do some askin first!

    Re: Any screeders on here?

I screeded a floor quite a few years back at the farm where I was siting a corn dryer, was rough as bu**ery beforehand but solid.

    1; Scrubbed the floor clean
2; Lots & lots of PVA
    3; A bit more PVA
4; A stong mix of (I think) 50:50 sharp sand & cement with PVA in the mix

The screed was only enough for a leveling 1 1/2" max coverage so I can't see how a DPM could be used so it's probably of no use, but it did stand the test of time without cracking up - unlike the rest of us!

    Good luck
