How about a trade, it is estimated 70% of plumbers are over 55 (i think) so there is going to be a shortage when this lot retires, my lad is the same age and he has done a heating and plumbing apprenticeship, I know they are hard to get, but he seems to be OK at the moment. My brother is electrican and seems to have enough work, even now. The ex wife is Head of Faculty at a college in Cardiff and they stopped the Army recruiters going in, because they realised that the lads/lassies would end up in Afganistan/Iraq. Great respect to forces personnal everywhere Or what about the Police, if he joined now could be retired at 50 with a nice pension and still young enough to do something else, I would steer clear of financial services at the moment, says him the mortgage man
Good luck to him what ever he chooses

Trades are always good to fall back on, ive done that a few times after venturing in to management but cant stand office politics so ended up jackin it in and going back on the tools, some people just cant handle straight talking.

But I have been in this game for 25 years and never seen the industry go through what it is right now, all the multi national builders have just shut sites down and locked the gates, at least in the early 80's we worked through it, not this time.

My youngest son is 15 and we are just working out what he is going to do, he loves the outdoor life thinking forrestry/conservation. I think I have put him off the building trade

But he wants a Ferrari too

Oil rig stuff is good money - how's he on heights? Got a few mates in rope access, pick and choose work etc, with the potential for an office job beyond 35/40 if he starts now.

Can put him in touch with people to ask if he's keen, but it does take some initial outlay to get started.

    HTHs.

If he is still a keen boxer he will have to find time to train that can become expensive, unless your part of the biggest firm in GB and get paid to train and box and do nearly every other sport you can think of.
The commitment for the Armed forces is high with Afghanistan probably lasting a lot longer than Iraq we are in the middle of the Third World War and it wont end overnight. I still believe the rewards over-weigh the risks, without turning this into a recruitment drive he should think very carefully about what he may be doing in 15 years.

Take the advice of an ex soldier, join the Navy or RAF, better pay and career prospects when you leave.

I was told last week that because of the weak sterling and all of our cnc milling machines comming from the mothership in Japan we can't afford to import machines, if we did we would have to inflate our prices to such a degree that noone would be interested anyway, so it seems that unlike my previous thoughts of "we're doing ok, I'll be alright" My job could in fact be in jeopardy. Means I'm going to have to re-asses just where the money is spent this year

Well I have just bought all my stock from UK at a fraction of what I would have to pay here, the exchange rate at the moment is definitely in my favour, which is good for foreign trade but crap for yourselves.
