1st Lesson on a big bike next week

Done my CBT back in June & completed my theory a few weeks back. Looking to do my DAS soon. Lesson on a 500cc Kawasaki next Sunday. Just looking for a bit of advice in regards to this. Been riding my XR-125 pretty much daily since July & I know it will be a bit of a jump to the bigger bike in terms of weight power e.t.c. Just wondered fro people who've done the transfer if it is a massive jump or not to difficult a transfer.
    Cheers
    Scott

When I did the DAS I wondered if I should have stuck with a 125cc then you realise the bigger bike appears to be easier to ride - it will be smoother through the gears and as it is heavier sit on the road better.

I have never looked back and have recently bought a 700cc Transalp which is Ace.

    Good look with the DAS

A bigger bike is slightly heavier when you are stationary but when riding it is more stable, as mentioned above, it holds the road better and does not tramline as easily. Overall the bigger bike is safer.
YOU ONLY NEED TWO TOOLS IN LIFE - WD-40 AND DUCT TAPE. IF IT DOESN'T MOVE AND SHOULD, USE THE WD-40. IF IT SHOULDN'T MOVE AND DOES, USE THE DUCT TAPE

Just remember to NOT give it a 125 handful when pulling away !!!!

    Otherwise as above

On the training yard the 500 will seem clumsy and to have a mind of its own, but within seconds of leaving the training center and joining the main road you'll be vowing to never ride a 125 again and grinning from ear to ear.

I agree with what everyone else has said, I had no intention of getting on a big bike, I just wanted to do the restricted test but the instructor took the 125 off me and told me if I wanted to get home I was going to have to ride the bigger bike.

Best thing I did, the bigger bike will seem a little heavier at slower speeds but other than that it'll be a walk in the park

Gotta agree with all that did my rtest on a GS500 a few years back, was riding the sons cg 125 around the day before, asyuo say felt clumsy to start, with was biggest bike i had ever been on and first bike on the road for 20 odd years apart from 50 CC scooter, had a couple of 250,s in the seventies
but once out on the road for a while and onto familiar teritory the instructor was saying slow up as the other student (a nice lady but i forget her name now ) was a coplete beginner

I did my restricted license then bought a CB500, great bike, may seem a bit heavy when stationary at first, but you get used to it pretty quickly.

I did much the same as you, CG 125 for a while used daily, and DAS on an ER5. Felt a little trepidation about going out on the bigger bike ,but within about half a mile i found it more comfortable, smoother, and at the first national speed limit sign when the instructor said "now go go !" I was grinning like a cheshire cat. Acceleration is quite a difference but when you size up an ER5 it's, physically not a very big bike...a perfect learner in other words.

You'll love it and pick it up in no time mate.

    Enjoy yourself and good luck.
