    ACPO proposal to ban motorcycles

I tried a search of this site but couldn't find any discussion of the ACPO suggestion to the Transport Select Committee that motorcycles should be banned at least from certain areas, and that they are "motorized toys" not suitable for modern roads, plus various demands for more rules etc.

Either I can't find the thread or nobody has been taking any notice of the shock-horror version of the tale that MCN has been enjoying itself with.

Either way, seem to be some more reliable reports now...

My attempt at a summary: actually the Police don't want road bikes banned or any of the other nasty things quoted, but nevertheless the Select Committee have published a report that says they do.

even though the majority of bikers disappear for the winter i think the numbers are so large that it would really create a problem if they tried to ban them..but for a motorcycle magazine, you couldn't get a more attention grabbing headline than "hey guess what, the powers that be are gonna take motorcycles away and leave you all with nothing". "the police will come round everybodies house armed with DVLA details and torch every last motorcycle in a world-war 2 gestapo style blitz"....and motorbikes will be a thing of the past and from that point on the world will hit a new period where disease and crime and sadness and everything negative will have gone because everybody knows that motorcycles cause all of mankinds problems... this is press sensationalism at it's finest

guys, you may be missing the point just as much as MCN do

There will be plenty of people who will delight in being able to quote "what the Police want" according to "an official parliamentary report". It's all ammunition for the people who don't want you to be able to use bus lanes, want to ban bikes from all remaining green lanes, make dayglo clothing compulsory, restrict you to having a 650 single with governed automatic transmission, or whatever.

It also lets them act as consensus seeking, moderate types when they make proposals which "don't go as far as what the Police asked for".

Re: ACPO proposal to ban motorcycles

Obviously with the rest of societies little problems sorted (street and violent crime irradicated, drugs no longer available at street level, burgularies a thing of the past, vehicle theft no existant) the powers that be are concerned that our police force will be left redundant, so what shall we get them to focus on....................I know......................MOTORCYCLES!!!!!!!!!!
Honestly!, I'm sure that even those that complaint about "noisy exhausts" would put the restoration of social fabric much higher on the agenda than banning motorcycles of any type and besides I don't believe that these reports reflect the views of 90% of the police force,

Well to be honest the ACPO should be looking at more important things like people getting stabbed on a daily basis Drugs and paedos

I'm sure you're right! Actually I doubt it reflects the views of 90% of ACPO, since (if the Telegraph is to be believed) they won't even back up their own report.

What p***es me off is that such total BS can be written, that the organization supposedly responsible for it won't even back it up, and yet it still gets into the official report

Even if it gets "corrected" you can bet it will be quoted for months or years to come. That "40% of bikers don't buy tax discs" rubbish, that was discredited months ago, is still getting quoted. For instance it got into this very Select Committee report.

Re: ACPO proposal to ban motorcycles

And...........the problem areas mentioned are so often nothing to do with serious "bikers" but more to do with toerags bombing through villages on stolen unregistered and untaxed vehicles, restore the social fabric I mention in a previous post and most of those issues are resolved.
But of course you are right, it will be talked about for the duration by a host of people who will totally miss-interpret it even further

Re: ACPO proposal to ban motorcycles

Total BS, I know someone who has his bike stored in his garage, not used for three years, on SORN.
It is a classic an original Honda 400 /4 in almost mint condition.
Plus there are some bikers who only use their bikes in the summer if the weather is fine, these are usually kept in a garage for the rest of the time, plus what about all the bikes in showrooms which are for sale .
All these are untaxed and not on the road although they are registered, unlike cars which are often unregistered yet still in use. It is just another attempt to alienate bikers, by trying to get the masses to get up in arms against us.
