Converting video files from one to another

Hi do we have any collective video nerds about?
I have an mkv file that I want to burn to dvd. I'm sure I should be able to do this for free, but I damned if I can find all the software to do it....
I keep finding all the software that relieves me of £30 or is "free to download" or whatever else.
So my plan was to convert to avi and then burn to dvd.

    Hi

Go to www.zamzar.com - free conversion online and they then email the file to you.

    Or try this http://www.mediaconverter.org/index.php

Again a free product that you download and convert away

    Hope this helps

Ahh thanks this is an 8GB + HD file though... so no uploading it!
And the downloadable tool doesn't seem to do mkv.

    Thanks for the reply though.

    How about mkvtoolnix -

    Windows and Linux versions available.
    Brrrmm - '04 XL650V Transalp in Silver

It's not a case of whether we can fix it or not - it's more a case of how fixed would you like it?

Looks like you're sorted now, but for others in similar situation, try www.afterdawn.com - a lot of info about this kind of thing.

Re: Converting video files from one to another

    Dave,

I would look into getting a program to convert your HD film to AVI then use standard software (like Nero) to convert to DVD. A normal DVD can not display HD so trying to convert an MKV file straight to DVD is a waste of time as you would lose the HD content.

Let me know if you sort it out as I have lots of programs at home (im at work atm) that do various converting etc.

Check this link out, VirtualDub is really good i have used it before. Should get the mkv to avi no problem.

Re: Converting video files from one to another

Virtualdub has never been able to do MKV

Now the outdated and not supported virtualdubmod was capable of doing part of the MKV decoding but only in conjunction with a few other programs...(that forum post is 4 years old)

Dave if you have any success with MKV conversions please let me know as I've not found any one step option that works yet
