Me and my two boys went on Sunday on bikes and what a trip it was.
Sunday morning 7.30am - freezing fog outside. temp -3degrees C. Hmmm Bad omen.
8.30 Charlie's Hornet 250 won't start - flat battery. Jumped off the Land rover.
8.45 - set off, I go to adjust my Right Hand mirror and manage to undo at the stem bolt. Stop and get toolkit out to tighten up.
8.50 - Cash point... if only I had known
9.00 petrol. We are only about 4 miles from home in half an hour!!! Charlie says his clutch slips at 12,000 rpm (redline is 17,000 so this is midrange for him!!!). Decide to press on and if clutch keeps slipping we will turn round. Charlie leads down motorway - 85+mph I am guessing his clutch has warmed now and is OK.
10.30 -good progress - stop at services to warm up - Alistair nearly falls over coz he can't feel his feet - ho ho. The rest of the journey is uneventful and arrive at NEC 11.30ish.
11.30 to 4.30 Wander round and lust after the new XT660z Tenere - gorgeous in a nice shouty
BLUE. Most of the rest is pretty average and nothing else I really fancy. The boys know that christmas is coming and leave with: 1 new helmet (£165), 1 new jacket (£200), Gloves (£60), Kevlar Jeans (£70), a chain and padlock each and... more that I can't remember. My credit card damaged and panniers severely overweight coming back.
Leave NEC at 5.30. Charlie is in the lead and does a life saver to join the main M42 carriageway but gives a second glance and doesn't spot the cars stopping very quickly in front of him - he jabs his front brake on which locks up and tucks under and down he goes - middle of the M42 in rush hour and right in front of me. Luckily eveything stops in good time, he managed not to hit anything except the ground and there is no real damage to him or the bike except a bent brake pedal and some scratches to levers, and paintwork. The motorway hard shoulder is used on that section during busy periods so there was nowhere safe to go so after a quick check and gettingthe bike restarted we headed off ti find somewhere safer to check it properly just as the highway patrol arrived. Charlie remarkably calm in the circumstances.
A much slower and subdued ride home on a very busy M6 saw us get back at 10pm very cold, and very very tired.
So an expensive but interesting day. Total cost:
Petrol £50 (2 bikes)
M6 Tolls £10
Entry £51
Lunch £25
Food and coffee etc en-route £25
other odds and sods £10
Purchases at NEC £500+
Damage to bike £200 or so probably
Not far off £900. One helluva day
