Target fixation there is a good point, if things are going tits up and you are heading for a lamp post if you look at it you will hit it, look at the gap not the obstacle, been through several narrow gaps at speeds i should not have been doing in my younger days by observing this rule, ask old Cyril about the morning he was driving down the road with a load of hay, he stopped ready to dig me out of it, and could not believe i had gone through the gap until he had unloaded the bales and i was not in the middle of the load hiding

Those bleedin' little old dears! They move surprisingly quick on those walking sticks.

As for deer; they're nothing but a nuisance on the road!

    Re: Swerve test

The swerve test has been in practice in the Netherlands for quite some time now, I think it's right to be mandatory.

I had to do my exam in the wet, that meant having to do both braking tests (both at 50kph) in the rain, as well as the swerving test. You get no sympathy from the instructors.

If you're riding on the motorway, or outside of city limits, you're likely to go much faster than 31mph, even in the rain (unless it's really pouring).

In your road exam, they do take weather into account (ie. you're allowed to ride slower than the speed limit without punishment). I had the heavens open up on me during my road exam while on the motorway, and I slowed to 80kph instead of the max. speed of 120kph, and the examinator said that was the right decision to make.

    Re: Swerve test

One of the main issues with this looking at the written BBC report is the length of the acceleration section prior to the swerve test.. But for gawd sake who here doesn;t use a decent amount of throttle in every day riding

One guy blamed his failure for this

In the Netherlands you only have 2 choices for motorbikes on your test:

    Restricted bike: 33bhp
Unrestricted (depends on the bike, Kawa's ER5 is the most popular, that has about 50bhp)

So no problems with 125's not getting up to the correct speed fast enough...

You can do the "Swerve" test on an XR with knobblies !!.

We are not far from Cardington and we took trainee's over there ( at the DSA's request) to have a go at this last year.........not one had a problem..

    Re: Swerve test

???? They're already doing a minimum of 30kph (19MPH) around the circuit on the lead upto the swerve test with a good 20m before they have to swerve, any 125 could do that easy...

    Cheers Stan.

That was my thought. Glad to have evidence.

I think the issue now is how easy it is to pass a car test. We need to toughen up the car test to at least has hard as the bike test.
