AGAIN #4

Took my Panzer to the MOT place the other day and the guy told me he nearly failed it cause there was too much play in the rear wheel.
Quick call to chad(which at the time was scooting around Scotland) and it confirmed my fears. No you can not just tighten it up,go to the Dealer.

Well this is what i did yesterday. After a quick stop at Chads for a Gallon mug of brilliant coffee he decidet to escort me to South London Motorad.
These are the guys which helped me so brilliantly last year.
So we rock up there, just about parked the bikes when the owner came running out greeting us and offering us some coffee.
When he asked what he could do for me i told him about the play in the rearwheel.
He immediatly went to the workshop guys and they wheeled my bike straight in and had a look at it.
While we had another coffee the guys came back with the report

Final drive gone again(this one lasted 12k miles)Gearboxseals gone as well as my rear disc damaged.(not sure why the disc was damaged but i am sure Chad will explain)

The owner then told me not to worry as he would phone BMW customerservice and that he is on my site
After 1-2 hours he came back to me and gave me the news.
Parts cost £1400

After a bit of number crunshing he said to me he would do it all for £150
Result

Once again i have to thank SLM for there brilliant customer service(and the coffee)
I only can recommend these guys and will be pushing any buisness there way

My problem is that my GS is my dreambike. Its the best bike i ever owned/ridden and i love it.I know i have obviously a lemon but it will not stop me from loving this bike.
Again now with having paid a "contribution" towards the fixing my drive and stuff has a warranty. As Chad says "the rest of the bike is running fine" so maybe i have to get used to the fact that mine needs a final drive more often then you guys need chain and sprocket

Cut your losses, sell it and buy another one there are so many to choose from lately at good prices. I had a 1100GS like that, after a bevel drive, gearbox and three clutch plates I lost it sold it. Best thing I ever did. I told Chad last night there is something wrong elsewhere with your bike possibly mis allignment with the gearbox shaft or something. Can you imagine how you going to feel if you post.....

AGAIN #5 in a year's time

I do hope this one lasts but expierence has taught me with "lemon" bikes they don't dissapoint......to dissapoint

I know the feeling dude, at the moment it is all about keeping head above water. Hopefully the panzer will change it's appetite for bevel drives to just fuel like the normal ones out there

Re: AGAIN #4

That bike is sure trying to ruin the BMW reputation for reliability, unless you count how reliable it is in destroying final drives.

Re: AGAIN #4

Pete didn't you take out the extended warranty? So shouldn't there be no charge?

Re: AGAIN #4

Not new this you know. Below is an extract from Wikipedia's article on the Panzer V from WW2

"The weakest parts in the tank were, throughout its career, the final drive units. The main reason was that the units could not be manufactured using hollow spur gears, due to the shortage of suitable gear-cutting machinery in Germany during the war. The final drives were in fact so weak that their fatigue life was sometimes as low as 150 km."

2000 XRV750 (NO 3), I think I'm getting the hang of them now, must fit the centrestand before the back tyre wears out. Damn, the driveshaft bearing wore out first!

Re: AGAIN #4

I find it strange that it is only on this model, O.K. so pete has a lemon and it is using final drives like chains but I have not heard of any other model with such a defect.
