a really well trained horse will do its best to not LET you fall off.
I was spoilt & grew up next door to a retired cavalry Majour who had all his horses cavalry trained. He taught us to "grip with the knees" by making us put the 2 10p peices (20p for an hours lesson in them days) between knees & saddle. If they were still there after an hour we got to keep them 
he was an odd old boy, had been a prisoner of the japanese in burma, but boy could he ride! He also taught us bloody well too.
I actually miss riding (horses) havn't done it for years...
