accepting a cash settlement makes it look like there was never a crime and it was all a scam from the start....
My wife and I were in car crash in Spain. My wife spent four months in hospital, two in a specialist head injury unit. She took two more than two years to be able to go back to work.
We were offered £50,000 after five years. The insurer (of the Spanish driver found guilty of the crash) said we could fight but they'd fight for another five years.
It was either keep the whole thing hanging over us for five more years or accept. I accepted. It was the first day of the rest of our lives. The tiny bit we had left after paying back everybody who helped us paid for a big party with bands and a magician.
We never look back now.
That is how I feel parents would feel too.
Oh sure, if I ever get a chance to firebomb the offices of Generali you will find me singing "keep the home fires burning (you little Italian ****s)" but it was much better to put it behind us than to keep fighting.
