Lucky escape in BIG Accident on the A19!

Friday night I was on my way up to Whitley Bay to my sister's house and was riding along the A19, as the fog got thicker north of Middlesborough I decided to slow down, not as much as I wanted though as other people were still going 70+ with visibility of less than 30m if that.

Got to Peterlee and found a stationary car in front of me, managed to stop (with the help of ABS), and went towards the verge in the hope of finding a gap. No gap but came to a halt put a foot down, just in time to be clipped by a Land Rover Discovery which destroyed the car I missed.

It made it to the BBC news here:

BBC NEWS | England | Wear | One dead in 'devastating' crashes

So I've concluded (and been told by various Police Officers, Paramedics and other people involved) that I'm very, very lucky.

Also concluded that many drivers are idiots and don't adapt to road conditions.

Bike has 2 damaged panniers and discovery paint on the badge from the rear passenger opening the door onto the bike when it was on the floor, but other than that is fine and came back 200+ miles today after a once over from Coopers of Sunderland BMW shop.

I came home a different way though!

    Super cool decision. Respect.

Must have been nerve-racking though. Take your time to get over it.

What happened to the people in the cars?

Naw, lucky is when you drop your keys in the road and they miss the open drain cover by a few milimetres.

I think you made your own luck there, mate. Well done for moving out of the centre of the lane (and for being able to stop in time).

Did you do the Lottery, with luck like that.......
YOU ONLY NEED TWO TOOLS IN LIFE - WD-40 AND DUCT TAPE. IF IT DOESN'T MOVE AND SHOULD, USE THE WD-40. IF IT SHOULDN'T MOVE AND DOES, USE THE DUCT TAPE

Nothing to do with luck, you reacted to the road conditions and proved your decisions were correct, always follow your instinct. If only all the other road users would follow suit, but enclosed in cages with ABS ESP Airbags they become complacent to the hazards and risks.

Glad you were able to open the thread, when its quiet look over your shoulder and say thanks
