    Ex Directory for Mobiles

Has any one heard of this and is it true ?

Subject: Do you want to remove your details from the new Mobile Directory Enquiries? - NOT SPAM
    Dear all

    This is not spam.

Recently, the telephone company 118118 purchased as many mobile numbers from numerous sources without you even knowing your number was being sold. If you wish to remove yourself from this process, follow these simple instructions:

As you are probably aware early next week all UK mobiles will be on a directory which will mean that anyone will be able to access the numbers. It is easy to unsubscribe but it must be done before the beginning of next week to make sure that you are ex directory.

To remove your number go here. (you need your mobile phone with you to do this, they text you a code)

true actually, they have been pushing for a directory for years, the same body that wants all pay as you go phones registered to an address and an individual so there will be less aninimity and therefore in their view less possibility of a crime.
personally my number is private,on a tariff and between me and the phone company. If it gets out through the unscrupulous sale of my details by the likes of the insurance companies and other search engines that won't give a quote without me putting in a contact number i kick up a stink and demand in writing they wipe me from their database.
It is quite easy for them to buy a cd full of contact details and create a database. the way they get round the data protection laws is to not give the enquirer the number but contact the searchee and tell them someone is trying to contact them and charging the searchee the fee for passing on the contact details of the searchee. they then rely on other idiots to willfully and volantarily divulge and register their numbers to be on the database and so swell the info they hold without any effort or more expense.

    Re: Ex Directory for Mobiles

Bloody Hell Looks like there's some truth in it actually, on further digging.

However, I can't see what the issue is. I never use 118118 for anything. And I never will. Rib off merchants of the highest order.

I've never had to use an enquiry service to get someones number, and they've never had to use one to get mine, in all these years.

So if someone is idiotic enough to pay a quid for a text to be sent to me - more fool them

    Re: Ex Directory for Mobiles

All they're doing is harvesting numbers...

A bit like when you get a spam email which has an opt-out link on the bottom of it.. You click the link and it confirms the email is live and has someone viewing it so you then get spammed more by them and also the address gets sold on.. The same with your telephone number.. Who's registered with TPS?? Quite simply even if you are you still get phone calls as some companies don;t care about the TPS lists, what makes you think this mobile opt-out (and remember you're not opting out to TPS which produces an industry recognised list but with actually a directory services company ) will be any different

    Re: Ex Directory for Mobiles

I have a Home phone number which was Ex directory then got sold on from a company I dealt with. It is still live but never connected unless I want to phone out to one of these.
My other house phone is ex directory and has a filter to stop unwanted calls. My mobile is for emergency use only and is on file at work for private hire contact.
