Mobile broadband question

Help Tech heads. I've just been given a mobile broadband usb dongle with 1gig a month for my laptop. I'm not a big downloader just a surfer. Is this enough for average surfing say and hour a week? I'm assuming it is as I'm not downloading stuff but I'm not sure coz I'm stupid.

If it's anything like my mobile broadband dongle it will last forever as you can never get a good fast connection

I bought a PAYG dongle with 12 gig for the year and I have found it quite sufficient for surfing this WWW thingy.

1GB should last a while unless you're watching online video/iplayer or online radio/music etc. For general web surfing I'd expect you'd get more than an hour a week (lots of the time you'll probably be reading and not actually downloading anything - and as far as I know they all go on data transfer rather than time connected so you'll only be charged for what you download).

You might want to check the contract for any overage charges if you're signed up with them or you or whoever gave you the dongle has a card or personal details registered with them though as I've read some horror stories about some of the contract deals where people have gone over their allowance and ended up being charged crazy prices for the extra transfer in comparison to what they were being charged per gb for their monthly/yearly contract.

There'll be some software you can get you can run when your computer starts up to monitor how much you're using (if it doesn't already come with the dongle) - though I'm not sure which to recommend as mine has an online balance. If your provider offers an online balance it's worth checking that it's accurate incase it lets you go over without realising (I've heard of this happening).

If you find you're getting close to your 1GB limit for the month and need a little extra to tide you over, vodafone do a pay as you go dongle that costs £15 to charge up with 1GB, and as long as you use it at least once every few months (I think it's every 6 months - even if it's just for a minute or two during that time), then the credit doesn't expire. At the time I got mine they were the only company doing this in the UK, and all the other pay as you go deals relied on monthly payments and if the data allowance wasn't used up then the credit expired and you started from scratch for the next month with the same allowance.

If you've already got the dongle and it's unlocked, then you can pick up the vodafone sims from time to time on ebay for £10 (and they include £15 worth of credit on them so are free or even a gift depending how you look at it). Vodafone don't do the sims on their own unfortunately and only sell them with a dongle at about £40, but there was a guy on ebay who was buying them, unlocking the dongles then selling the dongle and sim card seperately. If you're interested in that, you need to be careful to get the right one as vodafone do a lot of different packages, and some of their monthly/yearly contracts I read were over the top for overage charges (though the true pay as you go one that I've got there aren't any overage charges and you don't even need to give them your personal details unless you want to use it to send sms messages - it's just like a mobile phone, and when the credit runs out it stops working until you buy more I think).
