    alternative to rock salt

i've heard cat litter can be used instead of rock salt. i have 2 posssible theories on how it works :-
1 it simply adds more grip to the slippy stuff.

2 it encourages all the local cats to p##s on it so melting the slippy stuff.

if you have any more ideas please comment.

The real reason is it absorbs liquid so dries the surface.
YOU ONLY NEED TWO TOOLS IN LIFE - WD-40 AND DUCT TAPE. IF IT DOESN'T MOVE AND SHOULD, USE THE WD-40. IF IT SHOULDN'T MOVE AND DOES, USE THE DUCT TAPE

also it creates a grippy surface eh, dont think it melts the ice just puts a roughness on the surface, small chippings or coarse sand will have the same effect
