3rd Altrincham Grammar School. Scouts, Ventures then service team.
With the Peaks 30 mins away to the East, the Lakes to the North and N Wales to the West we spent far more time walking than drill. Not one pair of mustard trousers or a single beret, but we won every mountain-craft competition going.
Fabulous, and a long, long way from central London.![]()

Cubs, Scouts, Army Cadets then Real Army. None had any effect on what I chose to ride (a lot of army bikers seem to be fair weather power rangers). Watching the Dakar with my Dad and his mate (who had some sort of BMW Gauloise dakar bike) was what sold me!
I was a cub, then a sea scout and then a venture scout. Never went camping, never did any outdoorsy stuff at all.
I once met William Gladstone (no, not that one, his great-great-grandson). And I once got to carry a flag at the head of a procession into Norwich cathedral (I drew the short straw and we hadn't turned up for rehearsal, so I had no idea where I was supposed to go...).
All we ever did was play British Bulldog and then (when I was a venture scout) go down the pub.
We once did the Baden Powell Anniversery event (25 miles walking in the snow at night in Thetford Forest in February, doing a "stunt" evey few miles - rescue a parachutist from a tree, help at the scene of a car acccident, complete an assault course).
Just as well my parents took me walking, sailing, camping, youth hostelling, cycling etc. I think it was them what done it.

You've got plenty of time to go. Mum mum is 81 and still went camping last year. About three years ago I persuaded her to invest in an inflatable sleeping mat. Until then she was still using the bit of foam in a big plastic bag she'd had since when we used to camp as a family. (As a child we always called sleeping mats "plastics".)

British Bulldog not for the squeamish. Would probably be outlawed now by the H&S trash. Built character though!![]()
