Been to Vodafone today. They have transferred my son to a new contract and given him a free phone for the same monthly amount.

This was done free of charge.

They also pointed put that I was out of contract and, when I declined the new phone, agreed to reduce my monthly payments by £15 and put me on a new 12 month contract.

This new, cheaper contract, was also done free of charge.

And they gave me £40 off my next bill. I know the sales staff get paid for signing people up on contracts but to cut my overall bill and give out a free phone makes no sense to me.

I have had a word with the local gang leader and my son is due to be robbed at knife-point in exactly a year.

Three more muggings and I should be being paid by Vodafone to have one of their phones.

You may ned to increase the amount of muggings to pay for the most recent bill I reckon!!!!!

Ahhh that takes me back. Back when I were a small teenager I ran up a large bill on the landline to my girlfriend. This was mainly because mobiles hadn't been invented, phoneboxes were out of the question as I wasn't keen on the smell of wee or the sound of crunching glass underfoot.

My parents put a small lock onto the phone dial to keep me off of it. Hands up who remembers phones with dials!

When they were out I used to pick the lock with a pair of stamp tweezers, use the phone, then put the lock back on.

Damn those little annoying blasted locks.... Luckily we switched to touch tone quite early on, so Dad then found call barring.

People often forget how much more, in straight money terms, expensive it was to use the phone in the seventies etc local calls were ten plus pence a minute. I remember when Dad first got a mobile it cost him over a pound a minute to call the house, in the eighties !! Now for my £45 a month I get 1700 minutes I can call anywhere inc 33 countries with plus texts and data and blah blah blah.

My landlord did that when I was student. You could still pick up the receive and tap out the number (ten taps for zero). We ran up all sorts of bills.

DITTO.They very helpfully capped the 300 minutes so she cant go over them and incur additional charges on her poor dads bank account!!!!!!
