I'll tell you what: I haven't half slowed down over the years. And still they never catch me.

I feel palaeozoic for saying so, but I rather miss the old way of boy-meets-girl. What bugs me is that there is so little initiative or thought involved in everyone chatting to each other on mobiles and facebooking. They all end up with huge numbers of 'friends' who they couldn't give a damn about and nothing really counts.

Unless I was very much alone, in the age before time in which most XRVers were at skool, making your first overtures to a girl was a difficult matter involving sweaty palms and rehearsals. Frankly, it meant something.

Now you just 'hit each other up' on facebook, swap numbers indiscriminately, and have to make no effort whatsoever. It's as if all yoots are terminally bored and simply can't be arsed.

When my Moglet has swains paying court to her in a few years, I'll be urging her to expect a bit more than some uninterested phone chat in the dead of night. A daffodil. Half a Twix walking to the bus. Lending a sweater on a cold day. That sort of thing.

Am I pushing at a firmly closed door?

This is Lewisham, Joe's love lives in Deptford.

Last night, he went out to see her to say goodbye. This morning as he headed out the door in civvies to a school trip to Paris without his love, I noticed the chink of a new gold bracelet on his wrist - a gift from his girlfriend.

    How romantic....... except

He looks like bloody Del Boy.
