    Re: Empty Panniers

I don't have a top box so I tend to have my smaller pannier fitted to the "wrong side" of the bike as someplace to put shopping etc.

Having said that if I don't need to get any shopping, i.e. going for a ride out or over to a mates, then they tend to be taken off.

Maybe I should think about investing in a top box ...

    Re: Empty Panniers

Well I leave mine behind at every opportunity. When camping they stay in the tent when I'm out playing. They don't actually make a huge difference in filtering as if the bars go through the boxes will also. Only thing you have to be mindful of is cranking it over too early when passing a car. They do slow the bike down a bit at motorway + speeds when fitted. Wind resistance more than weight I bet.

Top box stays on though. Far too handy to leave behind.

    Re: Empty Panniers

I had the pallets bolted on for the TLD, as I’m using them again for my Nordkapp trip they are still on, I can still filter ..............just, I cant be bothered at the mo to take them off but after Norway they’ll be removed and are only fitted when needed. At the mo’ they are not removable without tools but normally only have one bolt in each of the two swivel locks (DIY Pucks).

My top box stays on all year

    Re: Empty Panniers

    Let me join the banter
I commute, so panniers in the loft except for touring and out for the day with my wife on the back.
Top box always on for day to day stuff, unfortunatley my bike lives under a cover, so top box off at night.
I was so tempted by aluminium panniers, but that might have been for the look, but I do tour and put on a lot of mileage.
Let's be honest, the only advantage of ali panniers is coming off; you can bang them back into shape.
But, as I intend to keep mine upright and I have panniers in the loft, I'll continue to use my ABS jobbies.

    Re: Empty Panniers

I used to virtually live on my bikes and kept a set of givi 21's on one bike all the time so that I could just swap them between bikes as and when ! For a while ( I had a little nervous spell ) I rode with them all the time, as it's a lot less painful dropping an @ with panniers onto your legs. I never seemed to jump clear enough and those pannier rails freekin' hurt the bones ! God bless frozen pees
