I'm currently considering switching the old airhead for an oilhead 11 GS.
Reasons in favour: They're dead cheap at the moment second hand, it can take more load, it's a bit bigger and roomier, both for a rather tall bloke in front and for a passenger, it's got better mpg and needs less maintenance. Basically the main reason is that with 2 up and camping gear I'm hitting the limits of the airhead frame, it's a bit cramped.
Reasons against: It's kinda boring and clinical compared to the old flexi-framed cow, the telelever makes it so that even the biggest git can ride corners at mental speeds, and I hardly need more encouragement there lest the pictures start coming in... (Found myself throwing it into corners at 80 mph within 20 minutes of getting on one for the first time in 8 years. Corners where on the airhead I'd call it well enough at 60 mph.)
And, yes, to be honest the fact that it's the Vauxhall Astra of bikes does slightly count against. Everybody and their dog has got one, and especially with alu boxes on it (which is just practical luggage!) it does have that stigma of C&E wannabeism. Which I guess is reverse-snobbery on my part...

Difficult one that Michel. I covered 30k miles on my 850GS (1100 with different engine)
I hated 'BMW' comments. I'm a rider, not a bar room, garden fence, couch potato.
One could argue that the Transalp is middle of the road and not a dreamers bike, but.... it does everything and does it quite well.
If offered a Tranaslp or a GS..... Well, I'm not going to answer that, but I ride my bikes.
I love bikes and yes, that includes the Dneiper![]()
