Mine's the airhead, though they don't quite live up to that reputation, whatever it is.

(Let's see now 80k miles, already rebuilt gearbox, heads, shaft drive, starter motor, and rear shock (twice). On my second collector box and headers. But yeah, crackin bikes. )

Still waiting for the replacement oil cooler...

If memory serves me, the 100GS has the same engine as the R100 road version.

Therefore, you can remove the oil cooler if you're only doing road riding.

The oil cooler was fitted in case of overheating if using the bike at very slow speeds like trials riding for example.

There is a loopback filter cover made just for the job

I had an R100GS, another one I should have kept.....

Very true, in fact canon are one of the few that make their own cmos sensors.....Not sure about the CCD sensor though

I think Canon use Sony CCDs

I use sony CCDs in my Astro Cams and they are about as good as they come for small(ish) sensors, the bigger chips made by Kodak and the likes are nowhere near as sensitive

other than that I'm another Canon convert having used Nikons for years I went over to a 300D a few years back and can't fault it really.

as for the airhead / oilhead debate I'll come back to you when my oilhead breaks

mmmm Olympus OM4Ti was the dogs in the day. Wish id never parted with it. Working (but not owning) a range of hasselblads has gotta come close to the top for me though.

....Snaphappy wasnt so much priveldged to use a Sinar in the day as had no choice as the forces couldnt afford autofocus back then...kind of a 'look, we found this in a box, can we have a photographer?' situation wasnt it..lol

Canon dont use Sony sensors...Nikon and Sony are all Sony sensors, Canon use CMOS which is their own design though im sure its built in a factory alongside the Sony's.

Hence the difference in performance on Canon chips V Quality on Nikon/Sony ones.

Funny following the history on cameras as the once leader Nikon, overtaken by Canon aka AF/electronics has now pretty much started to swing back to Nikon again...only just....its hard to beat Canons marketing to ramp up numbers.

oh - and as for the bikes..Yes, I remember the quality of the old Beemers...shame it had to pass but technology moves on, or should I say Eurocraps emmisions demand it.

The R100R is basically identical to the GS and has an oil cooler too, a bigger one than the GS, even. I think the older R100 bikes had bigger sumps with cooling fins, that'll help a lot too.

Yep. Currently debating the same thing. It's a lovely bike, but a bit limited once you add a pillion and camping gear. An 1100 would do that a lot better, and has a few other pluses, but on the flipside, it's boring.

Strange isn't it, but the fuel injection is smoothish and fewer moving parts, but you've got a fuel pump which is a pain to get at and when the injectors get choked, a pain too.
Bings on the other hand can be removed and pulled apart whilst you're sat on the couch
I cured drips on my Bings, but I still would shut off the taps if left overnight.
I think I suffer from Oldbikeeitus (I'm not old though) if I don't know how it works, it scares me
