    Modern mans finest hour

I just watched the first two Chilean miners come to the surface in Fenix 2. What those guys have been through defies words. Can you imagine what those first 17 days must have been like for them, not knowing if you'd be found, or even if anyone was looking for you anymore, and had abandoned you for dead. And then the long interminable wait for the rescue shaft to be drilled, and the cage to be designed and tested.
Those guys are a breed apart.. they were so calm, so relaxed, so disciplined, so controlled.
It was incredible to see that first miner reach the surface.
And yet, his father refused to be there, instead waiting for the guys brother, as they have apparently had some sort of fall out. What kind of mindset still holds a grudge in these circumstances
Mind you, some of them might not be so chilled later on tonight when they get home to the wives, if all the press reports are to be believed.

Lets hope and pray the rescue continues on track and all 33 men will come up safely, along with the two guys sent down to them.

Surely one of mankinds finest hours

Now, the guys who dug them out, would you mind sending them to the A27 near Lewes please, it's going to take the council guys 11 weeks to replace a short stretch of safety barrier!! Maybe the NASA guys could reduce this time

Amazing what you can achieve when you're tested.

Evan Davies on the Today programme: "Trapped in a small hole and awaiting rescue." It was a story about Lib Dems' about-turn on tuition fees.

And the Weather began: "It was a chile start to the morning."

I joked to my flat mate that food and stuff they sent them had drugs of some sort in them. Something to keep them calm. But it is admirable how controlled and calm they seem, but I guess that is the best way to be. Anything else and it is just wasted energy when you're trying to survive.

Also heard that while being in the mine they where receiving more nutritious food than they normally eat while out on the surface. Also noticed they get give Oakley glasses when they get out of the mine to protect their eyes from the sun.

I'm impressed with the orderliness and efficiency of the Chilean rescuers. Nice to see that they beat the early estimates of a Christmas rescue by a huge margin.

Just seen this comment too: "Margaret Thatcher's 85 birthday and we are glued to our screens cheering on miners"

I just hope and pray that they can get their lives back to normal as soon as possible. There were reports, on the BBC news, this morning that there are people (vultures) at the mine wanting to get the rights to their stories.

I'm wondering if, being a resident of a catholic country etc etc, they might have slightly arranged the cave-in and underground sound-proof residency to get away from the nagging mrs and they must have as many kids as me (4), did they fancied a legitimate month away with the lads. I am also wondering how I can get a job in chile or even wales in the mining industry (if we have one left that is).Or can I just buy a ticket now the new entry/exit lift has been installed, I might have to lose a couple of inches to fit but hey, the incentive is there!
