So it's a security issue rather than a mac filtering issue.

the security type that you were using, as it a default password? or had you used one of your own? (sometimes certain routers will let you enter to many letters into the security phrase/word and it will only use the ones it needs but new devices might be more picky about the length)

does the Asus definatly use the type of security that the router uses? (a common issue with ipod touches!)

try changing security type until you get one that all your devices are happy with.

(There are loads of other things you can do/try and I'm sure someone will be along in a minute to pick up on stuff I've not mentioned, but the changing security settings until it works approach will be easiest if your not 100% sure of what your doing, just make sure you take it 1 step at a time and don;t foget what you did incase you need to undo it again)

I'd forgotten about the MAC address filtering.

It's not a case of whether we can fix it or not - it's more a case of how fixed would you like it?

The eee pc is running MeeGo which is by all accounts a linux based system. I have entered the WEP code thingy and it says its registered to the network. I can open up the router from another PC and see the little fekker so I know its there.
It just wont access the internet unless I switch off the router protection.
Going to call a night as a film is about to start

Thanks for your help all, I'll get the fekker cracked

    Re: any network experts here

I came across something similar with my daughter's laptop, Vista . It claimed to be connected to the wireless network, but only "local" (whatever that meant). did some googling to find it was a common problem, (plenty of those with Vista!) and found some fixes to try, including a few registry hacks - a bit risky, i thought. However, reinstalling the latest drivers for the wireless network card finally did the trick.
You're using a flavour of Linux, though, so I don't know if the above would help.

    Re: any network experts here

Just found a thread that may be of some use:-

can't connect WEP network - Forum | MeeGo

Seems the Meego build of Linux can have some issues with WEP and DHCP (and a number of of other security/networking type things as well)

If you have a look through and arn't sure of what any of this means then I'd farm this one out to someone who can actually sit at the netbook and play with it on your network (or one that exhibits the same problems)

I'm not familiar enough with Meego to offer anymore help than this at the moment, If I get chance to play with it (apparently there is a 'Live' version which I might see if I can find and play with) then I'll let you know if I find anything.

Yup, This exact problem happed with paleriders laptop, it wouldn't connect unless there were no encryption. I sorted it for him but had to be there physically to mess about with it.

    Re: any network experts here

    Ok,
I'm typing this from my Tosh laptop running Meego (Live USB)
It connected first time to my Virgin Media Wireless Router using WPA encryption.

So I would suggest setting your router to WPA (I'm guessing it was on WEP previously but thats a guess) and try again.

If that still doesn't work them I'm afraid I'm out of suggestions, without being able to replicate the issue I can't trouble shoot it any further

One the plus side This 'Meego' does look quite nice, I've built a couple of PC's before Xmas for friends and used ubuntu so that they could get on facebook and do basic surfing, but this looks nicer so i might stick with it for a bit and see how it goes.
