Thanks for the offer MOM but I think I need to go out and try a few bags for size.

    Re: Sleeping Bag

I can't stand Mummy Bags and as a big fella, I need a big envelope bag!

These days, I use a basic 30 quid 2/3 season bag, but the secret weapon is a £10 fleece sleeping bag from Wilko that I use inside the basic bag. Good to -3C I have found as long as I have a foil blanket under me as the air beds are damned cold when the ground has not warmed up at this time of year The fleece bag is also good for if the nights turn warm when on a trip and the standard bag is too hot.

The problem with the above is that it is bulky compared to a mega efficient, down Mummy bag

    Re: Sleeping Bag

Have you tried army surplus down sleeping bags. They might be a bit narrow at the foot though, I have a oblong bag with no reduction in the width at the feet.
I had to us army ones for real, woke up in morning with frost growing on the bag, still cosy. (no tent)
Like you say, need to try before buy really.

Make sure you see it before you buy though. It's not unknown for the lads to use them fully clothed including boots. I've even heard stories of some surplus places cutting the damaged bottom bit off and resowing then end up giving you a shorter bag.
