    Restricted licence bikes

My son has the final part of his test booked for next Friday and assuming he rides to the standard he is capable of he should pass. Due to his age he would end up with a restricted licence which limits him to 33HP for two years

As usual he has started looking at new bikes (new to him not brand new) and has asked me what would be a good restricted bike. I have to admit I have no idea so anyone here care to recommend one that even in restricted licence mode is capable of covering the miles as he wants to attend the National and possibly the kids weekend as well as come on our European jaunts so it would have to be able to sit at 70-80 for extended periods.

    Any suggestions?

Going to have the same issues when the missus passes her test. But as she is over 21 we are thinking about letting her practise on her Vara until the time is right. Then get a couple of lessons with an instructor then go for full licence. Obviously if your lad is under 21 he cant do this....so check out this list.

my daughter has a CBF250, dead simple and appears bombproof,

I've had 75 out of it and it seems to sit there quite happily, get there reasonably quick too.

we picked her '04 plate up for about £1400 so they're not expensive either.

    Check this link out

    33bhp

Shows a good list of 33BHP bikes, and bikes that can easily be restricted to 33BHP.

Our mike had a 400 blandit with a restrictor kit he loved it ,
A standard slr or Vigor stuck on dyno would not put out anymore than 33bhp at the rear wheel i reckon

    Re: Restricted licence bikes

It's just a sickener when spotty yoofs can get in Cosworth as soon as they pass their car test, why aint car licences restricted for two years to allow said spotty yoof to mature or even to survive the first year.

Good luck for your son Boris, as said virtually any bike can be retro fitted so go for the one that fits his size, and sporran

    Re: Restricted licence bikes

Careful about restricting something which relies on having a powerband to go anywhere. I wouldn't restrict an I4 600cc personally. Trannies restrict well (they become less efficient tho, lol) and I have a pair of restrictor washers for a 650 FS so you can get going for a song if you want. Felt exactly the same through the low part of the rev range, but at 5000rpm, where the derestricted bike starts to get going, the power starts dropping with restrictors fitted. That's fine because the tranny has plenty down low. I expect it would be more of an issue on a peaky I4.

Don't worry about certificates- they aren't worth the paper they're printed on, though FI have done a VERY good job of convincing people otherwise. Complete pack of lies on their website- check out the actual law! If you want, you can disconnect one of the coils- so long as power output is <33bhp, law doesn't care. Also, rear wheel power or crank power isn't defined. If I knew that at the time, I'd have got a suzuki dr650 over the alp, as the dr650 makes about 34bhp at the rear wheel so could be "restricted" without doing anything. Love my alp so very glad I didn't!!
