Very interesting. We could probably have guessed how things would have gone... but at least the story shows it's not just prejudice. Yamaha and Triumph suffering without proper protection of their vulnerable bits, BMW giving various problems, KTM aceing the hills and running nicely so far; but I wonder how long that will last!! Looking forward to Part Two.
I need to send in instruction in how to switch the traction control off on the GSA. and photos of Vader and J adventures in Wales.![]()

Not too good an outcome, all things considered. Only one bike made it without a "fatal" breakdown: the Yamaha lost its oil; the BMW was losing its oil; and the Triumph was difficult to start or ride with a broken clutch lever. Would you want to descend down a rocky track into a muddy ravine on any of those? You'd be wondering if you'd ever get back out!
And then there's the KTM... Well known for its all-round ability, but not a bye-word for reliability either. Hmm.
It's a huge pity the Yamaha didn't have a bash plate. In the US, Cycle World magazine found the Yamaha to be a very good compromise of off-road and on-road ability. Most of their route seemed to be smoother trails, and their Yamaha appeared to have a bash plate!
One snippet that caught my attention: They mention the Yamaha being lacklustre, not having a lot of oomph.
I'm sorry? We are still talking about a 100+ bhp motorcycle, aren't we?
Mad, they are. Bunch of sportbike wannabe's.

A classic example of print journalists doing video badly.
You'd think they'd at least put the failings to the manufacturers for comment - and fancy trying that with no sump guard - they look like amateurs.
No surprise the KTM did OK though.

My KTM has been a nightmare, it let me down once when the fuel pump failed. Four years and 26,000 miles of road, touring europe and some pretty extreme trails. It's a bloody disgrace I tell you![]()
