I agree it was sheit Spice girls on zimmer frames, George michel looking like a dodgy russian and what was the only fools and horses sketch, and what was the guy walking on the hire wire and bursting into flames supose to represent? Gypsies stealing cable. The only thing that did not happen was mini's racing around the roof. Come on. J

Gypsies stealing cable. I like it

It was meant to be the album cover of Pink Floyd's Wish you were here. Not sure what the high wire was for but the men in the suits and the fire were there.

Agreed, spice girls were crap. But I'm 53 years old and possibly they wern't targeting me when they asked them to appear!

The tightrope walker? Ever seen the album cover from Pink floyds Wish you were here album?

George Micheal looked like the stereotype gay leather clad biker, I thought he was good myself. It I'm a secret George fan and just wish he'd sort himself out and get back to making great music

Only fools and horses sketch is a British icon perhaps in the same way as is: the Mini, Black cabs, Micheal Caine, good old Eric Idle and lets not forget Ray Davies, if you don't like any of the above then try to find a set list from the night (yesterday's Daily Mirror page 4) the ceremony was a celebration of Britain, British pop culture and youth, for old farts like myself they put in acts that were popular when I was a youth ( I still have stashed away my copy of ELO's, Mr blue sky on blue vinyl bought in about 1977) I really can't see how it could have been better (ok, maybe having the spice girls in a black cab and having maybe just a bit too much explosive to "blow the bloody doors off") but then it's hurting the 25 year olds that do like them.

Yup I enjoyed it... and it looked much more fun than the Brazilian taste of Rio.

    Quite possibly

Be fair I've only moaned about the Olympics, not because of the sport as such, but the endless amounts of commentary and associated rubbish that adds little but costs a bundle.

The opening ceremony was weird and in my opinion not worth the money but that closing ceremony. The first 10 mins was just plain daft and the rest of it seemed stuck in a bygone era.

Look at what we had that was actually current.

The black girl that sung a couple of songs (Sorry I have no idea who she was but I guess she was reasonably current)
Then there was Madness, George Micheal, Queen, Floyd/Genesis, Petshop Boys, Annie Lennox, Three folk in three rollers, The Spice Girls, Take That, Norman Cook (he plays records you know), various dancers and boy bands from talent shows and I'm sure some other has beens.

So looking at the above list we have three people in three rollers and a girl who sung twice that are remotely current and even then the three in the rollers didn't seen that talented to me. The rest were fantastic in their day (and some still are) but hardly showing what Britain is all about in the 21st century.

    I've just "got" this.

The Guzzi guy has big arms because he is always "fantasising" what it would be like if his Guzzi was as reliable as the BMW and the BMW rider has a big arse because he spends so much time riding his bike and less time pushing it.

    Have I got that right?

I loved the John Lennon bit. Up till then I'd found it all a bit dubious, but that made it for me, and gave sense to it all. So for that alone, I'd vote in favour . It might not be '21st century' but the message of Imagine should last for an eternity.
