    cameras

Following my minor rant ('overtaking on hatched markings' thread) about the possible ambiguity of being able to cross broken white lines, occurs to me they are testing cameras to automate enforcement of other offences that are not clear cut.

Tailgating. A camera to catch tailgaters seems like a fantastic idea! Until some w***er pulls in right in front of you and you get done for tailgating...

Overtaking on solid white line. Roadside camera linked to sensors in solid white line. Seems clear cut, except that you are allowed to overtake slow vehicles (milk floats, cyclists - anything under 15mph I think??) on solid white lines...

Stopping in box junction. Not at all clear cut. You may stop in a box junction if making a right turn and the only thing holding you up is oncoming traffic.

Red light cameras. Already with us - now what do you do if an emergency vehicle needs to get by and the only way to make a gap is to pull over the line?
flat out on utterly inappropriate tackle

Major rant coming........ yep, big brother is definitely coming....

Police the roads without any human intervention, judgement or common sense. Infringements become black and white - either you did break the speed limit/cross a line/drive too close or you didn't. Cameras provide the irrefuteable evidence, no appeal, no mitigating circumstances, no police either.

I could go on and have deleted most of what I wrote...
